Hi Guys...Im a Polo GTI (9n3) owner but am posting this for a friend...any help would be very much appreciated
Car: 2002 VW Golf 1.6
Owner: Alec R
Definition of Problem
1. Stalling
Symptom: Engine cuts-out (stalls)
Resolution: Wait 1-3 minutes, and will restart. It struggles initially, then runs
clean.
Frequency: 1-2 times per week. No discernable pattern. Most times, occurs early in drive (2-5 minutes from starting engine). However, it has occurred after running for 30 minutes. Has happened in warm and cold weather, also wet and dry.
2. Over-revving
Symptom: Engine over-revs. Revs jump up to 4-5,000 RPM, and sits there.
This mostly happens while I am driving, and I can feel the car trying to accelerate, so that I have to push clutch in.
Resolution: Turn engine off - wait 10-20 seconds and restart the engine. Car then runs smoothly.
Frequency: 1-2 times per week.
No discernable pattern. Most times, occurs early in drive (2-5 minutes from starting
engine). However, it has occurred after running for 30 minutes. It mostly happens on way to work (morning), though it has happened at other times also.
Notes
Occasionally get fluctuations in engine revs (like a pulsing) at idle.
The engine runs very strong most of the time – no problems.
