  • Bora VR6 Turbo vs Mk4 R32 mint

    Howdy All

I am currently faced with a small dilemma. As some of you may know, I've been slowly doing things to my Bora 4mower like full suspension refresh and general maintenance and a few mods. My long term plan though is for a personal loan to finance a forged internals turbo build. Not only is it unique but it would have massive power, amazing sound, and basically once you have finance you can mod a car to your own personal taste and standards.

The other option the boss and i have agreed to is to sell the Bora as is (after a very hefty detail) plus another car i have and she will fund another $5K or so to plant myself in a mint Mk4 R32 - with the caveat that i stop modding.

Hi, my name is Dyldo, and I am a mod pig. I can't stop modding. I'm like an evil version of Tim the Toolman Taylor except i don't have any skills. My other worry is that I am a sales rep and can do up to 1,000kms per week and most of you might think it is cruel punishment to use a R32 as a daily like that.

I am torn, and need community help

it was a car, it was built to be used.

I don't like the idea of getting loans to do car mods. I view it as being similar to a cheque book build!

If you like modding, you're not going to be able to stop any time soon.

Keep the bora, and keep out of debt. Save you ass off, then turbo it.

    (turboing the bora, nice!)

good view. I should have said that the Bora (because it is my daily) can't be off the road for a huge amount of time and so the mods would all be done at once - hence the borrowing for it.

And because i'd be paying interest (I don't like paying interest) i'd map the mods out on paper first, buy all of them and then be done with the modness. I mean seriously, if i had a well-modded Bora Turbo then i could chuck the modpig in its box for a long while.

Mate, an R32 isn't going to stop you modding. If anything your going to end up doing all you have again and much more. It's a catch 22 situation.
You find little touches everywhere and think I'm I've got an idea for that, and your away modding again !
I think my R is great. Each time you get in and start it up you know your in for some fun.
I got my R in May and have stuck just about 20,000k's on it since. But thats about to slow down as moving closer to work. Bought it to use it, thats what I do. It's been nothing but fun too.

To have something original and unique is always a plus. Especially when it is excatly as you want it. Would you be happy or are you going to wish you had an R ?

Guess good time to make a decision, before you get too far into modding your Bora.

its funny isn't it, cause the Bora with a turbo and a good package would be just as unique as a mint car that people know is only 1 of 200.

With the R, I place a big value on the fact its so unique and its almost to a point that it should be kept concourse. Then on the other hand i realise its a car (as gorgeous as it is) and its not like its a Phantom or anything so maybe just stay with the known devil and build the Bora. But then i saw that dealer black R32 in SA in the cars for sale section and made a small mess....

You know my opinion on this one

To add to my opinion, if you get a R32 i guarantee the desire to mod wont end. No matter how fast something is, how good it sounds and how smooth it drives, there is always some mod that you will want to do. I had this same tricky decision to make a lil while ago, decided i'd keep modding no matter what so better the devil you know than the devil you dont!

Hmmmm mint R32 hey... my turbo setup would fit nicely on that.... *slaps self* noooooooo must not sway from plans!!!

Well, either is an option for you mate. Owning a MK4 R does have its ups and downs. Upside is that its a hugely enjoyable car to drive and own. It should give very little problems in the long term, and you have one of less than 200 left in Aus. I'm up to 94,000kms and find the car doesn't look or feel anywhere near as old as its age suggests. The downside: you do get used to the power it has, and sometimes want for more....

Overall though, both good choices and I don't think you'd be left 'wanting' with either one.

I would say you will get the R, and then want more power again and be in the same situation. And everything will cost more with R32 next to it.
Boost the bora and be unique in that way, and you will get it handling as good as an R, and going a damn sight quicker for pretty good money

I bought the R so I could turbo the VR6 (in the not too distant future hopefully), a plus in that I have a nice cruiser and wont have pressures on to finish the build on the VR6. You have a nice cruiser with the bora, get as much as you can bought first and try and insight any problems you might have, and I wish you all the best

Don't underdo it and then have to spend money twice either

I wouldnt go turbocharging a bora if its your daily.
Lots of potential for a lot of money and a lot of time off the road.

Agreed with what others say, you wont stop modding, its in your blood.
If need be, keep the Bora as the daily and buy something cheap (like a turbo import) to modify.

Yeah you're kind of in the boat that I was in after the loss of my R.

In my opinion you need roughly another 30k after purchasing an R32 to get it to a level that I would be satisfied with and that's if were to do things in one hit. Stock it's still the most awesome VW in my opinion but there's just too much to fix and/or improve upon. I couldn't justify going down that route with where I'm looking to go with life at the moment. Therefore I had to find something that I would be happy with stock. Aside from not really liking any of the current range of new VWs they all require money to be spent to get them to be what I would like. Thus I ended up in the Clio, the purest and best handling hot hatch on the market and it comes like that stock from the factory.

Hopefully one day I'll have enough money to be able to get another MkIV R32 and upgrade it to the level it needs and deserves for weekend cruising and other general awesome times.

I'd say stick with the Bora and make it awesome. Maybe have a look at the Euro Wreckers up here in Brisbane at Seventeen Mile Rocks for a certain R32 wreck that might be able to sort you with an engine to transplant into the Bora. Just remember they only paid $3.5k for the whole wreck and the engine could be stuffed and/or missing various important pieces (such as a throttle body which was stolen). Sorry if this doesn't really help you make a decision and/or kick the moding bug.
