Hmmm, interesting info Loon because I'm thinking of the same thing about my 1.6. Bar the seats and MAYBE cruise, everything else in the GTi doesn't really appeal to me. I had a sunroof in my last car and really don't want another one, leather is more hastle to me than cloth and all the extra gizmos just add weight. PLUS, I already have my suspension set up, wheels and tires, my 312mm brakes fitted and I too like the metallic green colour.

Out of interest, what would you charge for a GTi gearbox and engine? And why would the rear axle need swapping?

      Thanks loon for that info,
Does anybody know if the gearboxes are different from 1.6 to 1.8T engines? i just spent $3000 on getting a 2nd hand gearbox and had it strenghtened.

That is one result, but what if it's not the desired result? I understand completely where Clarkee is coming from, I would love a GTi but not only do I not have the time to go out and look for one that I want, we also can't afford the time without the cash from selling the existing vehicle, just so we can spend a week changing over all of the other goodies we have already installed before trying to sell the existing car which alone could take months and you probably won't end up with the price you want/expect/need.

Look, I understand people's perception of "Oh, just go buy a GTi and be done with it" because it's easy, but sometimes easy doesn't suit, can't be afforded or is just too damn plain. So please people, if someone says it at the start of a topic, we don't need a ratio of 5 negative to 1 positive remark of the same ilk every time that this topic is brought up.

I for one would prefer to just convert the engine and gearbox and be done with it instead of ripping my existing car apart again, ripping apart a GTi, fitting all my existing stuff to the Gti then putting the GTi stuff onto my existing car, then trying to sell the existing car. Yeah, it might cost the same, but I find it far less inconvenient.

              Just my 2 cents.

Good luck then. I told you what you could do and what I would do, and I think that's what most people ate getting at.
I would sooner freebase heroin into my eyeball before I would carry out the conversion to a 1.8t when the car is already there to buy at around the same price to convert your existing car. It's your money though, but that's my 2c.

OK. Let me see if I understand your points.

Buying a GTI is a bad idea because:
                  Time-
It takes time to swap mods (such as wheels/suspension) from a 1.6./existing car.
It takes time to find the right car.

                  Cash:
Money will be tied up between purchase of new car/sale of old car.
Might not get a good price for old car.

                  But installing a new engine is somehow viable . . . ?

How much do you think a new engine costs? What about exhaust? Electronics? Wiring? motor mounts? Labour?
How will you register the car?
How will you insure the car?
How much will it cost to buy and install sports seats (with airbags), climate control, three spoke leather steering wheel, 288mm brakes that you would get with a GTI?
Do you think it will be quicker to swap a swaybar or an engine, transmission and all other parts?
How long will the car be off the road to install a new engine?
The GTI was engineered for it's level of power (such as it is). Will you be upgrading everything to suit? How reliable will the end product be?

In the end you'd be left with a modified base car thats missing GTI trimings, that would likely sell for less than a standard 1.6.

Its your money, but an engine replacement will likely cost more than you first estimate and you'll lose again when you sell/register and insure the car. Either live with the smaller engine, blow a heap of money on a replacement (for an inferior result) or replace the car.
