  • Timing Chain

How hard is it to replace the timing chain and associated gaurds? I'm fairly sure mine has buggered itself as i can hear a marbley type sound coming from that side and a few mechs have said the same. Pissed off as it was supposivley replaced at 100000km its currently at 140000km.

Also does anyone else apart from ecs sell a timing chain kit?

    Cheers

strange, why was it changed at 100k? No change date on chains......Ive only ever fitted a chain once years ago and cant really remember it but I will say make sure a good qualified tech does the job if you are going to change it.. may be its just the hydrolic tensioner and guides that are routed??...........vwtech.........

I have wearing guides as well.. the noise isnt getting much worse so I am not worrying about it "yet", however the chain kit is available from ECS for about 300 iirc, they offer two versions of the kit. Also, I have been told this is prik of a job which involves removing gearbox etc.. so you may as well do the clutch/fly at the same time (if funds arent hemorrhaging enough already!)

check out youtube for a few vids... also depends how noisy it is... mine is just an annoying rattle on idle still

There is no interval for then chain whatsoever. Done 2 in the last 2 weeks for independant workshops, one was an Audi but same same. The hydraulic chain and tensioner can be noisy but normally when they are its carbon in the oil pump and pick and it manifests to the head and timing gear. Have it properly checked. Not a job for the average joe or back yardie, if they chose to do so then all the best to them. Experience talking here. I havent had to do a 24V Chain yet, plenty of 12v. They have got so much better so i would be questioning the chain at that amount of ksss. To do the job it is the front off the car and the whole shebang out, crazy not to , and easier to do the timing. By the way the timing tool is different for the 24v and the 12v.

Maybe its was the belts that were changed at 100,000 ??? anyways have you looked at German Auto Parts ? they have timing chain kits .

Hmm, Well the dealer said it was changed at that so he could be lying. I've been told that yeah it is the guides and all that.

Goodfella thats what mine sounds like and its annoying me as-well hence why i want it fixed. Are you worried about it jamming up or anything?

            I'll get a recording tommorow

I have had a couple VW trained tech's listen and they said its still reasonable, and when they get REALY noisy,, then its change time.

My 4mower has just under 90k (I've put 53k on it) and I dont drive miss daisy around.. so I figure the clutch will need replacing in the next 10-15k, so its def a job for then... although, with the exch rate at the mo, it might be worth buying a set now to ease the pain when it is clutch time... and try and squeeze in under the 1k duty limit
