MK4 Golfs (99-04)

Hi guys,
Im looking at buying an MK4 Golf, could anyone tell me the differences in the years from 99 through to 04?
Its hard to tell from carsales.. but some of the newer ones have some extra features like leather seats, cruise control, sunroof, 2.0L, etc.

Oh.. and are the gearbox's supposed to be bad in these things?? My brother had an 02 MK4 for about 2 years, but he didn't really look after it, and his gearbox went and he was having troubles with the clutch at stages too..

I've driven a few golf in many years.... clutch in later years is lighter... and back row seats seems higher in the earlier year's golf... probably engine is the main difference... older years only got 1.8(please correct if i'm wrong), later years got 1.6 and 2.0.

The horn is different too, older years got louder truck sound horn, but later ones sound like a japanese toy car...

Older years got a front fog light, later years totally removed...

Newer ones may have climate control, older ones not offering...

There should be more, but above is how much I recall... My Golf is 2003 Sports 2.0

From memory the later ones are south african built and pre 2002 Germany.
