well looks like i should listen to you lot more often

the old girl is definitely sick and is at Exoticars in Parramatta now in the very capable hands of Arthur. The battery was getting ~10v under idle so clearly not healthy at all. was a tad over 12v at rest anyway. unsure so far if its a reg or if its the whole alternator so will have to wait and see. sure its going to hit my (sore) hip pocket. oh well.

Yep - mine shows Ltr/Hr at idle too

Let us know how it goes Dyldo and what it ends up costing you - My 'Alternator Workshop' alarm has flashed up on the dash a couple of times now, so I'm sure I'm in for a replacement soon. It seems to only have occured when I almost stalled it in busy carparks, but it came good, so I'm hoping its only due to the near-stall

Sorry to hear but definitely the alternator thats gone Unfortunately because of the type of alternator on our cars you cant just replace the regulator, need to do the whole unit.

You should be able to get a genuine bosch oem replacement alternator for about $500-600 supplied (or a decent amount less if you can get it trade price) and labour to fit should be no more than 2 hours (how long it took me in fading light and i'm not a mechanic). Its really quite a simple process to fit and in honesty i reckon i could change one in just over an hour, maybe an hour and a half if i had to do it again.
If you hunt around you'll most likely be able to find Bosch reconditioned alternators (from the bosch factory) for around $250-300 supplied.

Gravey, your alternator workshop can come on when you almost stall it, as in rrrriiiggghhhttt on the edge of stalling it but shouldn't come on any other time. Checking your voltage at idle no load and under load at idle will give you a good rough idea of how healthy your alternator is

well the Bora gods have smiled on me. Turns out the voltage regulator was shot and i am home and hosed without the cost and drama of a new alternator. Pick up the car tomorrow from Arthur@Exoticars. Awesome work.

Heading there first thing, so roughly 0800.
              (OT, but its my thread)
If I have some spare time, can I get a ride in yours, just to make me realise just how terrible my suspension really is?

Ah, mine will be up on a hoist still that early. May see you there though!

Good to hear its sorted! Maybe i shouldn't have listened to my mechanic when i was told the regulator wasn't a replaceable item! Oh well, lucky i changed it myself and saved a few $$ i suppose!
