  • 24mm rear swaybars

    I know this topic has been covered before, but i haven't really found the direct answer i'm after;

    As i'm sure any VW/R32 owner is aware, the MK4s have the apparent understeer due to the majority of engine weight being quite foward from the suspension towers etc etc, now to combat this a thicker rear swaybar is needed. Now, I was going to go and get a 24mm rear swaybar as a friend of mine in the US uses and reccomends highly, but out of a couple threads of this forum I hear "get kits or it will throw out the cars balance" etc etc.

    I was wondering how much of this is actually true? I mean, it only makes sense to use a thicker rear swaybar to reduce the understeer, wouldn't beefing up the front one as well just leave me in the same position?

    I'd very much appreciate some educated responses to potentially save me buying a front bar as well as rear....

    24mm is a massive increase from the stock (15mm?) rear sway bar.
    Fitting that bar will make the car oversteer a lot more.
    If you go with a front and rear kit, it will still understeer, but at a higher threshold.
    This gives a much safer feeling than the snap oversteer that you are likely to get with just that thick rear bar.

    You have probably already seen this kit but I will post it up anyway:

      i guess it all depends on the personal preference. I have taken my car to a really good wheels place and did the wheel alignment and wiped half of the understeer off! that swaybar is too thick IMO maybe go for a 21mm. that sould give you a nice balance

        It all comes down to personal preference as balkanac said. I have the H and r bars (bought from ecs and installed with pss9 coilover) installed on my car and recommend them. Firms up the rear, plus balances the car up IMO. The r32 is always going to feel front heavy-thats the nature of the car. I'm hoping for more improvements in the rear especially when I get around to installing the unibrace and fixing the rear camber with adjustable rear control arms.

          i strongly recommend both should be upgraded together (or eventually).

          my old ralliart magna exhibited awful imbalance with just the rear bar.

            Yeah, having just the rear is okay, but having both makes all the difference. Even with a heavier front to match the rear there is a lot less understeer. Makes the car so much tighter and responsive.
