clutch pedal on floor

hey all
a mate of mine has a golf 4 1.6, occasionally the clutch pedal goes to floor but does not return, during such time the car remains in gear...
anyone know where to start looking for a solution
oh by the way i have not looked at car yet, just tryin to get a heads up
