Wierd sound when start up

Just as i start my engine, pretty much every time. There is a weird sound coming from behind the dash on the drivers side. It sort of sounds like, your spinning a wheel on a skateboard that has shot bearings? Anyone had this before, or got an idea what it is? The sound goes for about.....like 1 second I reckon. It is pretty loud too, and you can hear it pretty well from outside the car also. Sounds horrible!

Plastic/metal crunching sound?
Open the bonnet and get someone to start her up. Could be the starter motor dying. I had this for about a year. then the sound went away haha. So i just keep in mind that anyday it might give up

ummm, i guess it could be a sound like that. Yeah i'll have to stick my head under the bonnet while someone starts her. Good thought on the starter motor, could be that. It sounds awful. Look like an idiot when i start it up with people standin around. hahah they are like "man that guys car is crap as hell".

starter motors do tend to sound terrible when they're unhealthy (used to drive a ****box old ford laser for a bit some years back and it'd sometimes make the worst screeching sound when the starter motor ticked over)

It could be the starter not retracting. When it starts the starter motor is spun at high speed, making a screech sound.

If so you need a new starter, not now but some day. Mine has done this for 4years now. I have taken it out and re-greased about 3 times, it shuts up for a week or a few months but always comes back. I have had it reconditioned as well and it came back after a few months.
I'm waiting for the day it just gives up, then I'll replace it.

My wife and I refer to it as the "duck" under the bonnet.

hahah duck under the car!!! good one! yeah that sound clip is spot on. Ah well thanks guys, at least its not something THAT bad that needs urgent attention. As i am stretched for cash atm until i come back from holidays end of september.
