  • ABS Wheel Speed Sensor replaced, still acting up

I recently replaced a front wheel speed sensor, still having an intermittent ABS warning light and VAG codes pointing to tolerance issues and/or no signal. I don't need my ABS cutting in randomly so want to get it sorted.

What's the best next step? I was thinking of trying to replace the sensor cable, some have suggested a full inspection which would take hours ($$$), I figure just replacing the whole cable would be a better move - is this a big job? Can I just disable it for now?

    cheers for your thoughts

    bump - thoughts?
still cuts in even when stopping normally or when I'm driving can occasionally hear the abs pump kick in even though I'm not pressing the brake.

The pump will run randomly to keep the accumulator charged. Are you sure you changed the correct sensor? Buzzing out the wiring wouldn't be hard with the diagram. The loom could have rubbed through somewhere. Thing is to change the loom would involve going throughout the car. Far better if it's a front one to find the damage and repair if there is some.

VAG pointed to front left, it was front left sensor that was changed - soon after I was back at the service shop as the ABS light had flicked back on (it goes off and on, not always from a brake event) after having the pump kick in during regular braking. I was going to try and order a new ABS cable from ECS or another site if that's the recommended move, didn't realise this could cause such a needle in a haystack!

        cheers

          ...still unresolved....

Just an FYI, I tried cleaning the contacts on the ABS 30amp fuses (above battery) as I'd heard this was potentially a culprit in the intermitent signal problem. As this (maybe) reduced the issue as I only had the ABS pump kick on once in 30km I am wondering if replacing the 30amp fuses with new one's could resolve it?
If so, can we use standard fuses as these green ones seem a bit special and I'm guessing I'd need to hit a VW dealer to purchase - or can I use the stock standard blade fuse style?

          Other options - either:
          1. a wire has been damaged from the front strut job I had done at a service centre and I need a new ABS speed sensor wiring harness
          2. the ABS control module is faulty
3.as one of the front rotors seems slightly warped (albeit it has been like this for a lot longer than the ABS issue and is on the opposite side of the side of the car causing the issues) .

Very frustrating problem, appreciate any input.

What was the cost for that repair ?
I've priced wheel sensors at about $30 from the states, locally they are $250 - go figure.

I've got an ABS issue ATM. It kicks in when driving slowly and braking, mostly when turning. It always happens when pulling into carparks.
I don't see any warning light however.

Sounds like you may have exactly the same issue as I did, I only really found a solution when I discovered there are known reliability issues with the ATE ABS unit/controller on earlier years MK4 Golfs. I had no idea how to remove it so just drove out to the electrician and he took care of it. Its the best service I have had considering others were advising that I might need to recheck the entire wiring or get a new pump etc. I was being quoted for the better part of a days worth of labour which in the end would not have resolved the problem. The VAG codes were also a bit misleading. By the way that's that's way too much for the sensor, I had parts and install for about 200 at a Sydney service centre. Check out AutoElectronics if you want the ATE module sorted out.

Sounds a daunting fix might need to check some cable connecting to the ABS system or just bring the whole problem to the dealership.

Is there somewhere in brisbane who plays with ABS modules?

For what its worth I found my ABS problem was due to the left sensor bolt coming loose, the sensor was moving around. I tightened the bolt and all is good.

Like they said previously the ABS fuse is on top of the battery, so make sure you didnt stretch the wiring or something. The ABS wires come out through the separate plug on the back of the fusebox on top of the battery.

There are also two small earth points under the battery tray which are for the ABS system earths. There are two really big earthpoints and then the ABS ones are the smaller ones towards the back of the car but still on top of the chassis rail

...or you now have so much power with your pod filter the ESP is kicking in
