Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • If it was your car, where would you mount this mic?

    Hey guys,

Got an alpine 103bt head unit with built in bluetooth after a $250 fine for using a mobile while driving..

I've managed to get everything else connected and planning to route the ipod cord to come out of one of the vacant plastic pieces next to the hazard light.
Would slow drilling do the job alright? I just need the other end (blue/green plug in the pic) of the ipod cord to fit

Anyway, the main issue is finding out where to place the mic, it's the bottom one in this picture: (with the holder next to it)

The cable's 4m long so distance shouldn't be a problem

I was thinking of putting it where this guy did:

Anyone got any ideas? Preferably something that requires the least amount of work and trim removal.
I was thinking somewhere in the dash but it doesn't seem to fit anywhere

Any help/opinion would be great guys

I put mine inside the interior light assembly.

There's a little grill there that looks like it was made for it and it works well.

Behind that little grill there's a recess with a block of foam just jammed in the hole.

I just put the mic in the hole and cut a couple of pieces off the foam block to wedge in there and hold it steady.

I can take a picture of the back of another light that's already out of the car tomorrow.

That's a great idea Pete! Mine is mounted on the A-pillar, works well but looks crap. Might have to look into moving it, not sure I have that grill there though as my light cluster is different (no sunroof).

The pillar or the grill in the light look good. I think the pillar maybe easier for running the wiring though.

As for drilling the plastic: Take the blank out and put in a vice. You can drill it easy but I have had good results using a conical grinding bit.
I use a set like this...

i have tried the "mic in the light" idea but it didnt work for me. People couldnt hear me. So my mic ended up on the A pillar
