  • Hazard switch ticking

    Hey,

So i have a weird problem at the moment with my hazard and indicator relay making the ticking noises at random times and random speed. The indicators and hazard switch still works fine but mainly after using them does it make the ticking noise.

I sorta had a look at the connection and pushed it in but seems to not have worked.

    Any tips?

    Cheers

Sounds like the relay is failing.
The tick sound is the relay contacts opening and closing.

I had the exact same problem! My problem was the indicator stalk, VW diagnosed (dont know how) and wanted me to give them my arm for a new one so instead i went to **** smiths and bought a can of CO Contact Cleaner (N1072) | **** Smith Online Store and sprayed it down the indicator stalk into the assembly. Be warned its apparently very very highly flammable and some people thus recommend unplugging you battery when you do it!

I however just had the car off, sprayed it down there with the indicator stalk in various positions (dont pull on the high beams). After letting it sit for the time given (i'm assuming to let fumes etc to clear) i tried it and all was well. No more erroneous ticking

Where is the ticking coming from? The relay switch is behind the Hazard button, not the indicator stalk.

I had a similar thing with the relay last year & the indicators (in the dash cluster at least) would flicker on & off too. Fortunately it stopped after a few occurances and hasn't happened since!

I did find a leak in my windscreen seal around the same time so it's possible a bit of water had run down behind the dash and caused a hiccup, but that could be coincidence too...

its coming from the hazard switch not the indicator stalk and the indicators arn't going off neither are the dash lights. Ill give the stalk idea a shot i guess if it doesnt stop anytime soon.

Just a thought, it's not the air direction flap servo clicking is it? I had that once, a clicking from the dash that sounded like it was around that area.

Does it stop if you put the air flow on to recirculation?

Mine was also the hazard switch ticking as the flasher / relay for the indicators is there. My indicators also weren't flashing when the ticking was occurring and there was no sound coming from the indicator stalk (nothing there to make a sound anyway).

Few links that made me confident it was the stalk after the dealer diagnosed it as that (i thought it was the relay at first too)

The same thing happened to my MK4 Polo - the flasher relay had to be replaced. I took it somewhere (i am hopeless at fix-it-yourself) cost about $40. When i pressed the hazard light button, it ticked normally. The dash lights (blinker ones) would flash dimly but the actual light bulbs on the car wouldn't turn on unless i asked them to (hope that makes sense - i'm not technically minded at all...)
I'm going to the pub... I may be some time...

My Bora does the same thing. The dealer diagnosed it as the flasher stalk. I haven't done anything with it as yet. As none of the outside lights flash when it clicks i have just learned to put up with it for the moment. It doesn't do it all the time.

Yay, Managed to fix it with some contact cleaner into the end of the stalk nearest the steering wheel. Cheapest and easiest fix so far on the car. Just remove the top plastic and spray into the end and wait an hour. Seems to fix it so far.

                      Cheers all

                        Reviving a really old thread

My golf just started doing this a week ago. Sometimes it seems like the sound is coming from in the dash (behind the hazard light switch) other times it sounds like it's coming from in near the indicator stalk.

I'm going to try the contact cleaner on the indicator stalk before I worry too much about whats in the dash. I have two questions. Firstly, whats the method for getting the top panel off the steering column? Secondly, if I have to get into the dash behind the hazard switch is there an easy way to do this?

                        Thanks for all your help!

When i did my fix i really didn't have to take any thing off (i did but it didn't help). Otherwise if you do its just the screws underneath the steering column. All i did was sprayed it with a straw where the end of the stalk is (In the steering column).

The hazard switch and all that should pop out. Heres a picture if it helps.
