  • Short Shift kits.

    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has any opions on installing a short shift kit in a bora or golf. Are they worth it? Any hassles or problems? This is the particular one im looking at Volkswagen Jetta IV VR6 24v > Drivetrain > Shifter > ES#4351 ECS Adjustable Short Shifter Kit For 6 Speed 02M Transmissions - ECS798000

    Cheers

I had the HPA one. It was awesome. Also get yourself some stainless shift linkage bushings whilst you're at it. Extra added awesome. You won't believe the improvement in feel and how good a short throw is. It does take a bit to get used to but once you are. Solid win.
    Cheers,

Beware of ebay cheapies...I had one on my 3-door MKIV and whilst I got used to the slightly-difficult downchange into 2nd, the guy I sold my car to had to eventually change back to the stock-shifter...well he is doing a good 250-300klms /day !!!

If you go the Dieselgeek option, be sure to get one ground appropropriately - the one Dyldo and I have needed to be ground to clear the bleed nipple on the gearbox/clutch just in front of the shifter.
          Nothing to see here...

not sure what you mean, ground as in material had to be removed to clear the nipple? where's the bleed nipple?

Yep, it needs material to be removed. As for the location of the bleed nipple:

So basically, the shifter mechanism on the top of the gearbox moves in two planes - up and down, and rotates left and right. The stock DieselGeek shifter that Dydo and I received (which is sold as suitable for a Mk4 Golf with the 02M gearbox) fouls the bleed nipple when it rotates left/forward in the lowest of the three positions it can be in - not by much, you need to remove about 1cm of material from the forward-facing part of the shifter mechanism (there's no structural integrity issues).

I trust you had to grind it down before fitting? Or maybe it was done for you prior? any pics taken from top down?

I had my mechanic fit it, and he mentioned that he had to modify it slightly ( I thought it was because the box had been out previously)

Not that any of you are thinking of it (who does?) but they are basically a one-time fit option. What i mean by that is that the alloy that Jim from DG uses is awesome but soft enough to burr and dint as you tighten the shifter ends around the shifter cable. The shifter cables have the appearance of being threaded (its not really a thread) so that the OEM shifter end can grip and stay on the cable. So the inside of the shifter end that accepts the cable starts out life as being all nice and smooth, but once it is tightened it engrains the thread of the cable, and becomes very hard to pull off again.

I fitted my DG SS to my Mk5 TDI for about 6 mths and then took it off to install on my Bora, and it was simply sheer luck that I was able to re-fit it (after getting 2 blokes to have a crack at pulling it off the TDI). Somehow by luck it went on in the exact right place for adjustment too, so i absolutely fluked it.

I have two pork-hands and was stil able to fit it. If i can, anyone can. Save your $100 and have a crack yourself.

i have the HPA front to back and side to side and its the best mod so far. its set to 40% reduction and it took awhile to get used to it but once i did i loved it. It was really easy to install and it came with proper instructions

Is the HPA a straight fit (no grinding), also is it alloy and how much did it set you back?

Hmmm, So does anyone tried the ecs one? Im thinking about the diesel geek one since so many of you reconmend it but since im allready ordering from ecs it will cut down on shipping costs.
