  • Dieselgeek shift linkage adjustment vid

Hi folks - not sure if this has been covered here before or not but has anyone done this? If so, experiences?

Did it multiple times on my R. First time was when I got my HPA short shifter installed. The second time was when I installed the 42DD shifter bushings. As with all things it's a little bit confusing when you first do it but easy the second time. I used the guide out of ElsaWin. Whilst I didn't watch the whole video, having one to watch would've been handy the first time.
    Cheers,

I did this with a mate, just follow the instructions on their website and it should be ok. Hardest part was getting the old shift bracket off, had to go and buy a 3 pronged ply to pry it off. I wouldn't try too long with your hands, you'll either hurt your back trying or smash your hands when it does come out. Go for it, it's well worth it.

agreed. the removal of old shift link made me cry out with pa-nger (pain-anger).

ended up using a harmonic balance puller, dodgily, but it worked.

great improvement, give it time, it will free up. its quite tight as first.

gambl0r, did yours increase the shift noise in cabin? and does yours have shorter throw 1,3,5 as opposed to 2,4,6?

You don't have to do this adjustment for the dieselgeek front to back linkage I believe, only the side to side linkage? The front to back linkage you just line up the end of the cable end with the groves...

dainese: the cabin noise when shifting is noticeable but all the gear changes are the same length. Maybe one of the cables needs adjusting..

OP they are really a great product! I haven't tried others, but I can vouch that dieselgeek is great.

Finally got time to mess around with it. haven't installed the short shifter etc - that wasn't the idea haha

I have achieved what I wanted though - taken 95% of any slop out of the standard gear shift and shortened the throw a little

i can't seem to get my locking lever to lock as they show it in the video... if i try push any harder it feels like it's gonna snap

It doesn't lock when all the way down - have to push down, release, down again, then i found by moving the locking lever when it was on the way back up, it locked. Need to be manipulated at the same time.

Once you've done the steps outlined in the video, you may need to cycle through the gears more than once to get them settled and shifting properly. Had to cycle through mine twice to get 5th and 6th shifting properly but didn't 'lose' any gears during that process as has been documented by some others.

That locking lever is the hardest bit of it all though, on the R anyway, due to limited space for hands.

i adjusted mine again just then, i don't understand the need for the locking mechanism (which is a good thing because i did try what you just said and it doesn't seem to work, it get's about 45 degrees up and that's as far as it goes, perhaps its damaged)

for the front to back position, i used a 5mm drill bit to put the lever in the right place
but for side to side, the gear lever has it's own centre position, so i found that all you need to do is release the side-side linkage, make sure the gear lever is sitting in the neutral position between 3 and 4, and then snap the linkage back on.
no need to push down the transmission into this so called home position, just leave it in its rest position (which is also between 3 and 4)

i see no need for the locking lever!

Hmmm not sure really but as far as I can tell, the adjustment would be more precise with the system locked.

As always - my ****ty luck with my car - I can't get the mother f#@ker into second gear now. That plastic lock knob doesn't lock the shifter linkage bit at all, even if I hold it down manually in place it doesn't fix my non-second gear issue. The gear knob feels sloppier now too.

My bad - I can shift into all gears except fifth.. Although I can select reverse without needing to push the shifter down. Any suggestions?

well it sounds like your side to side that needs adjusting. as i did, release that linkage, then go to your gear box, check that the gear stick is sitting in the middle (it should go towards the middle by itself but double check), then snap it back on. THen if that's still not right, try smaller adjustments. and if it's still not right, perhaps it's the front-back, but i doubt it.
