  • Location of O2 Sensor on a Bora V5?

The new O2 sensor from ECS should be arriving any day so I am planning to fit it at the weekend.

Can anyone tell me where the sensor is located on the V5? I know it will be somewhere between the extractors and the cat so once it is up on ramps I should be able to find it but it will save me some time if someone knows its location.

Also, is it accessible with normal tools or will I need a lamda wrench?

    Thanks!

Great service from ECS, from placing the order to parts in my hand ... 7 days! Nice.

Yep, they're great - I've ordered on a Monday before and had parts in my hand by the Friday.

WRT the sensor, there's one directly before the catalytic converter and one right after. I'd guess you have bought the pre-cat sensor. Not sure what tool is required to remove it, I do know that ECS sell a tool for installing/removing it, but that may be a convenience rather than necessity thing.

I can beat that. When I bought my VAGCOM cable from Ross Tech, I ordered it on a Friday afternoon and it arrived at about 11am on the Monday!

I'm guessing the O2 sensor is on the exhaust manifold.

From memory you can just pull them out? Maybe something like a Light bulb; twist and pull. But i might be going insain.
The one in my 2lt can just be accessed from the top of the engine bay, my mechanic did it while i was standing there. But i can not remember exactly where it was sorry.

That wouldn't be the O2 sensor, they are screwed in and can be hard to get old ones out from what I read.

might be wrong with fitment then...
If its the part im thinking. looking at the my 2lt with the bonnet open it is to the left of the battery, sort of under the engine cover. mines green?

Ah! That's the coolant sensor, something else I have to change too. Green means you have the good one, they originally had black ones which are known to be faulty.

For what it's worth, this description came straight from the graphics in my Bentley Manual, and so is probably as accurate as you'll get without getting up under a car to check it out.

Thanks! Although the Bentley Manual doesn't cover the V5 does it?

If I do have two O2 sensors I wonder which one the VAG-COM is reporting the fault from? The one I bought from ECS is the universal one so I guess could replace either. I will look for one before the cat and change that, if there is a second one and I still get the error then I will have to order another!

Will be tackling this at the weekend, seeing as there is not much knowledge on this subject I will take photos and do a DIY thread.

Right, so it appears the answer to my original question here is .... 4!!

I got the car up on the ramps this afternoon and slid myself under to see where I could see the sensor, found 2 around the cat, 1 just before and 1 actually in the cat. Here's a photo looking up at the cat:

So, having only ordered 1 new O2 sensor I did a bit more research and discovered a) on a V5 there is allegedly 4 sensors (2 on the downpipe and 2 around the cat, and b) the S2 in the fault code means the second one of the cat, S1 being the first one.

One important note, they are both in an extremely difficult location to get to with any normal tools!! Now I know why ECS sell a couple of special tools for this. Which of course I didn't buy.

As it happens, I ran the VAG-COM diag again and there are no faults being shown at all. So as this specific error appears to be very common, as revealed by a web search earlier, I have decided to leave it for now. I don't believe the fault code means it has failed, it is just a bit sleepy.

I am convinced now that the rough idle is being caused by a vacuum leak which I can't locate. Will have to take it to an expert for that.

Hopefully the above will help others as there seems such little info anywhere about this.

Unintentional bump to this very old thread, but I thought I would add that I'm pretty sure most OBD2 VAG cars have dual O2 sensors.

I know this was the case with Ibizas... OBD1 cars had one, and OBD2 cars had two, funnily enough.
