  • CDA second filter???

    Wanting to install my BMC CDA, just wondering where this filter (pictured) is meant to go???

    This was how it was setup on my .:R but the principal is the same. You may need a spacer on the attachment bracket. When you're attaching it have a look at how far the MAF connection moves back. If it's rubbing anything you may run the risk of breaking the wiring off and then you'll be in trouble. Also when you run the actual air hose itself be wary of any earth leads. I had to loosen one on my car and rotate it through 90 degrees or so to allow the hose to fit past. Once again if you snap one of these off you're more than likely going to have issues.

      ahh Treza, those last few pics kinda help because i've been wanting to change the snorkel to some 3 inch piping (still using stock air box)
      two questions
      What tubing did you use and where did you get it?
      And is the entry to your tubing pointing down or toward the front of the car? I can't work out what angle you took that last pic from.
      Basically i want to know the best place to end and angle it while trying to avoid it being too close to the ground (i.e. puddles!)

        That's the tubing you actually get with the CDA as far as I'm aware. I had the tubing actually facing downwards with a slight angled to the front. At the end of the day the thing is going to suck all the air it needs so the direction doesn't matter too much, it's just in a location where the air is cooler.
        Also I have my stock R32 airbox for sale. I think it is slightly bigger than a GTI one (not 100% sure though). It might be handy for you if you want to have a spare stock one and/or if it is an upgrade so much the better.

          Thanks for the pics. I know how i'm going to put it in but the second smaller filter is the bit that has me confused, there is nothing like it on the standard set up and I can't see where or why you would need it?
          Here is a pic of one installed on a 1.8t and this is how it says to install it:

          Installation
          - BMC CDA Intake -
          1. With the stock airbox removed, remove the MAF from the airbox unscrewing 2 screws.
          2. Attach MAF to CDA using sleeve and clamps supplied, be sure to orient MAF plug correctly.
          3. With MAF attached connect to intake boot on engine. Do NOT clamp it yet. At this time see how much of the metal strip you will need to mount the CDA. Cut the strip to the amount that you need and attach it to the CDA strap.
          4. Depending how you would like to run your cool air tube. I decided to simply run it to the stock area next to the battery and headlight. Roughly figure out how much tube you need and cut it to length. Place the tube in the spot where you want it and place clamp over end.
          5. Now you are ready to install the CDA. First attach the cool air tube to the CDA, next attach the MAF side and tighten all clamps. Lastly attach the metal strip to the 10mm bolt.
          6. Insert breather filter into plastic tube, and restrain using a zip tie. The breather filter will just slide right in for a snug fit, no clamps needed. Plug your MAF back in and go test drive!!!

            Ah ok I understand now. From memory and discussions with 99gti when he did his cold air intake, I believe the breather filter has something to do with the US spec cars and has nothing to with the Australian delivered cars at all. I think what you do is just cap that line off and all shall be well. Worth checking with someone who knows for certain.

              Ah, so would it go on the blanked off hose on the turbo inlet pipe (can be seen point left in the pic in the OP) that is used on the 180BHP 1.8t's I wonder?

                is this where you bought it?
                CDA: Enclosed Intake Systems (A3,Golf MkIV 1.9TDi, 1.8 20v) - JBS
                i tried putting it in the cart and it came to £196.84
                + Delivery Charges: £108.25
                VAT: £53.39
                Total: £358.48

                pretty steep shipping! Plus it shouldn't include VAT. did you get them to remove VAT?

                Plus their pre and post vat prices do not make any sense, it says only £163.35 excluding vat, yet in checkout they charge you 196 and then another VAT charge...

                  Can't help you anymore than that sorry. Neil (99gti) seems to be back around these days so maybe drop him a PM see what he remembers about it (I'm assuming he still has his CAI installed).

                    No I just ordered mine at Autobarn. Is a bit more expensive but I was just sick of buying everything from overseas. I just cross referenced the parts between JBS and the BMC website.

                      Also forgot to mention that ope126 had a modified stock airbox on his GTI when he had it with a hose similar to the BMC one. I think he picked something up from Pirtek or somewhere like that (hoses and fasteners place).

                        thanks for the heads up, but i think i've now convinced myself to go all out and get the CDA from jbs.
                        they got back to an email of mine, and confirmed that i don't pay VAT, so the cost will be £163.35 + £108.25 shipping (but shipping sounds ridiculous and they are going to get back to me after contacting their courier)

                        i think i also need to add 17 pound for the silicon hose, but i don't think you need the crank case breather (FBSA16-40).
                        I've asked for confirmation on this so will post back what they say.

                          i've worked out what the second filter is for, on some models (obviously not ours), there is a breather pipe that goes into the bottom of the air box:

                          as we don't have that going into our air box, we have no need for that filter

                          question is, what do you do with the electrical connections that connect to the stock air box????

                            That's about $120 cheaper than what I paid with the hose. Yeah you do need the hose to go from the the MAF to the pod, or else you can buy one from australia. I'm starting to think you don't need the breather filter, I can't see why you would. I've PM'd someone but they haven't gotten back to me yet.
