  • is the 4motion 12 or 24V?

had a search and couldn't find an answer.

at least with a title like this it should make it easier for the next guy, lol

    Also,

    I potentially have alternator issues.

can someone tell me what alternator the 4motion uses please?

There seems to be a lot of choices on the ECS website...

    much appreciated

24V. Similar motor to the MK3 2.8L VR6 but with double the valves, variable inlet manifold runner length and variable cam timing.

I think some of the early equivalent Jetta models in the US might have gotten the 12v motors. Not sure if there were any local 12v models.

If you select the Jetta IV VR6 24V on the ECS site then choose Engine->Electrical, you only get a choice of two alternators, one is refurbished the other is new:

        Volkswagen Jetta IV VR6 24v > Engine > Electrical

Pete's right on all counts. ECU for the 24v engine is also very different. The US got 12v VR6 engines in early Mk4 Golfs and Jettas.

And Rykby's spot on with the parts selection on the ECS website. There's only a few caveats with selecting the 24v VR6 Jetta IV to buy bits for our 4Motions - our cars are RHD, and some parts differ (alternator shouldn't though) because of that, and our suspension and driveline setup is like the Mk4 R32 or first gen Quattro TT, whilst our brake setup is the same as the 180hp or 225hp 1st gen Quattro TT (not the 3.2L, which has the same brake setup as the R32), with 312x25mm vented front rotors and 256x22mm vented rears.

In the end with ECS, ask them specifically before you order - they have good parts specialists onboard who can confirm suitability - and if you've got it in writing that something will fit but then it turns out that it doesn't, you're in a good position to arrange a swap.
          Nothing to see here...

out of interest, with the variable cam timing, is this on the intake and/or exhaust cam?
and anyone know how many degrees it can advance/retard?
