Ah if it just sounded like a loud turbo it probably wasn't a screamer pipe.
They are unbelievably(!) loud and well, very illegal. Similar to a car with absolutely no exhaust at all (because well, thats basically what it is)
They also let exhaust fumes out before the cat and as such, anyone caught will be up for a $10,000 ~ $20,000 fine from the EPA, and thats before noise pollution etc etc.
A mate has one on his GTIR though and I must admit, it is nifty.
Basically - If your ears hurt it may have been a screamer pipe, if not - Its just a turbo running big boost and a large exhaust. I havent ever seen a screamer pipe on a VW.
the best one i've seen was on a mates 180, he ran its own 1" pipe out to the back of the car with a cat from a kei car. got epa'd and only copped a fine for it being too loud!
