Golf Mk4 - Rubbing noise when turning right at low speed

  • Golf Mk4 - Rubbing noise when turning right at low speed

    Hey guys,

    As mentioned in the topic my Mk4 has developed a rubbing noise when I turn right at low speed. I have checked to see if there is anything obvious rubbing, but this doesn't seem so. The strange thing is that when it's been raining the noise isn't so loud, seems a light reverberation rather than the loud rubbing noise.

    Any suggestions would be great!

    could be a rubber bush or something of the kind starting to wear out and when its raining the part is obviously wet and lubed up in a way that it stops making a rubbing noise

      Could be a lot of things.
      From a busted CV joint to uneven wear on a tyre.
      Start with the easy stuff check tyre wear and pressures, check CVs for leaking oil /grease. Then move on to having a mechanic look at it.

          Do you guys thing it could be a dodgy lower control arm bush? I had them replaced about 6 months ago and I noticed a few months ago they were already pretty soft, like.. as if they hadn't been replaced. They were a part I got from unique motors in melbourne for $22 each. I thought they were fine but when I saw them last I noticed they needed replacing again. I didn't think they could do have this effect with the rubbing noise, but I'm not so sure now I think about it.

            My parents Mk4 Generation is suffering exactly the same problem yet it only has 40,000kms on it. Haven't diagnosed the problem yet. Have you had any luck with finding what it is?

              Nah, I haven't.. I am trying to work out a time to get it looked at. Let me know if you have any success!

                Why not put the car on full lock, in neutral and jack up the front right side, then turn the wheel and see if you can get the rubbing. If not, try the same with the left.

                Might help you narrow down what it is, I would have expected a rubbing sound to be related to the wheel rotation in some way.

                  Is your car modified (wheels, suspension, so on)? if its not, id say its more to do with parts on the way out (bushes, cv joints etc) as the others have said. a lot of these parts of recommended to be replaced every 100,000km or something. If the car is modified they wear out quicker.

                  You can get refresher kits to cover all these parts if it turns out that is the problem

                    Took car today to mechanic, as suspected by me. Lower control arm bushes warn. Replaced with mk1 audi tt/ r32 mk4 bushes.. No noise, no rub. No problems. All cars suspension performance increased dramatically.

                        My parents car had the same symptoms, turns out it was a broken wheel arch liner. Not immediately recognisable as the problem but since replacing them, the noise hasn't returned.
