  • Head Light Bulb????

    Hi all,

Driving to work this morning I noticed that one of my low beam headlight bulbs was out.
Does anyone know off the top of their head what bulb is required for the low beam?

    Thanks
    Pete

H7 for low beams on a Mk4 Golf, H1 for high beam, H3 for fogs if you have them.

http://www.powerbulbs.co.uk is a great place to source them from.

      Hi Manaz,

Thanks for that, I think I'll pick one up on the way home.

Probably worth it for an urgent replacement, but Powerbulbs are a damned site cheaper than you'll get locally, and they deliver really fast too.

I just changed my Brake Lights and Parking Lights on the rear Yesterday. Just got them from Auto Barn.

I was looking at changing the Headlights to the brighter ones and was wondering if i could do this and which ones are a good replacement and give a nice Blueish light.

yep there is a few options, do a search on the forum for results. I myself have some (i currently cant think of the name) they are great, except they dont seem to work very well at dusk when there are other lights around.

PowerBulbs do the Philips X-Treme Power bulbs in H7s, I can recommend them. I got a set of those, a set of H3s for the fogs and a free set of W5Ws for the parkers for significantly less than the cheapest price I could find in Australia (that wasn't a dodgy eBay shop, and even cheaper than most of those), and that was before the Aussie dollar was so strong.

They also do the Osram Nightbreakers (and they're cheaper again than the Philips X-Treme Power bulbs), but the X-Treme Power product rated best when I did my research.

I just replaced my low beams with H7s from Narva, the marginally brighter bulbs but still with a yellow tinge. It was a bit of a PITA to get in there and change them but not too bad. All up it was around $60 for the two-bulb pack from Autobarn.

I got these ones by accident (serves me right for online shopping in the wee hours haha)

I meant to get either the B4 coating of these, or the 'brilliant white'.

These are a bit too blue for my taste (i think the B4 would be about what you're after), and the light output is quite poor (but better in the ones i meant to order!)

                  hope this helps your decision.

One thing to note is that the human eye is terrible at using blue light for night vision - it may look "cool", but the further into the blue end of the spectrum your headlights run, the worse the usable light output is. Yellow may not look fashionable, but it's actually a lot better for human eyes to see by. I don't like yellow myself, so I aim for white without any blue, the Philips X-Treme Power bulbs seem great to me.

It's also important to remember that the less 'yellow' in a bulb, the less effective it will be in poor conditions ie. rain and storms.
