Doubt they'd fit under my 17" wheels!

(Hell, I think 400mm rotors would requite 19" wheels at least wouldn't they?

Given the weight of the standard R32 brakes, these'd also weigh a tonne! But I guess if you've gotta stop regularly from high speeds...
      Nothing to see here...

maybe a silly question, but if you're not racing your car (i.e. brakes are not overheating), and you need to brake in an emergency or are just testing how quick you can stop, will not the standard brakes (assuming they are reasonable), brake the car just as swiftly as a huge upgraded brake system (assuming balance with front and rear is correct for both)?
just been thinking about this recently cos i've been thinking of going to 18's and was wondering what the stock gti brakes are like. more weight at a larger radius will obviously take more effort to slow down... so just been thinking about it

You've hit the nail on the head there McDub. Unless you are having heating issues than there is not point in going for a big brake upgrade.

The purpose of bigger brakes is to dissipate heat better and therefore allow consistent repeatable braking performance with less fade.

The added weight from a big brake upgrade will actually increase braking distances in most cases, however over repeated stops your average braking distance will be less.

                    Cheers,
                    Trent

Edit: That said though, how cool is it to say you've got nearly 16" brakes with 10 pot callipers...

And when you get into an argument with someone about cars, you just pull out "my brakes are bigger than your wheels."

another thought, the more you spend on brakes, the less you have left to spend on tyres, so therefore by that logic, on top of the added weight, bigger brakes defintely means your car will be harder to stop.
at least it'll LOOK like it stops quick

not necessarily. you are right about the weight, but having larger brakes doesn't mean they are heavier. its due to the design and material used. look at the 4 piston porsche boxter brakes for example - they are larger than the stock calipers on the 4motion bora however weigh only half as much. they also use a larger pad and 3 extra pistons to evenly apply the pressure thus increasing breaking performance. however you are right about having good brakes and crap tires - totally pointless

ps: 10 piston brakes - so over the top...my engine doesn't have that many

If the pads are further out from the centre of the hub (i.e. with larger diameter rotors) then there is also a greater retardation effect for the same pedal pressure due to the extra implied torque induced due to the larger radius....like using a longer spanner to undo a tight nut...but in reverse.

I guess when modding a car, some people want to look at all aspects

Why would you increase power and improve handling and just leave the brakes as standard

I would rather have the complete package, and big brakes are also nice on the eyes and sexy behind big wheels
