Not always the motor, maybe not here but in the UK in the cold and rain the linkages seize up slowly causing the shafts not to move very well and slowly end up stopping............... you can strip them down and lube but usually comes back, better off replace...............VW...............
Yeh, agree with that, my wipers ground to a halt a couple of years ago, stripped the mechanism and free'd off. Lashed a load of grease on and they've been fine ever since. Common fault with Mk4's here in the UK. If it is the motor that knackered then it may be because it has been struggling to move a partially seized mechanism
im having trouble getting the plastic cowling off the window..
is it "glued" onto the windscreen?
ive gotten the pollen filter cover off but the plastic cowling wont move and looks like its got sikaflex sticking it to the windscreen
I just went through the same. Reading this post figured I'm best to do some reventative maintenance and latered the pivots in grease.
I had issues to remove the plastic cover also, more because I had no idea what I was doing.
At the bottom of the windscreen is a clip that runs the length of the windscreen. There is a strip on the cover that presses into that. I found it easiest to slide the cover left to right first, this freed it up in the clip, the persevered to lever it up. Best going in from the windscreen side, not from the engine bay.
Oh, the wiper arms need to be off first of course. They can be on tight, I luckily had a small puller that made the job easier!
Mine is an '02 with low kms so everything was fine, just added more grease to be safe. The trick is re-assembly, there is a spring washer and a couple of orings on the stems, I needed a clamp to press it together firm ehough to get the circlip back on. Hope I don;t need to do that again for a while!!
There was a lot of junk under there, I cleaned it out and put some armorall on before putting it back on. It was very difficult to put back on, found it best to tap it firmly with your hand to get it back into the clip. Would not say it fits perfect, but is back on OK.
