  • Looking At Buying A MkIV GTI

    Hey Guys

Test drove a GTI last night. I must say it was very smooth and gears changed well. The car has been well looked after and has all the service books and history.

The one thing i didnt see was the key less entry do these come with that. And in the middle section of the dash cluster is there a little display that is supposed to light up.

    Thanks

Depends what year model it was. Dont quote me but I think it was only the post 2001 models that had the keyless entry as standard. And no the centre of the gauge cluster isnt meant to light up, the Bora I used to have had this feature, it would tell you the fuel consumption, average speed, time taken on trip etc., but it's not in the golf.

Both are standard features with later build Golfs - 2000.5 update - as well as things like aero wipers, slightly different cup holders, smaller side bolsters on Recaros, and sunroofs as an option etc.

I think there was a bit of pick-and-mix going on in late 2000/early 2001.

My 01 GTI has the later wheels *see below*, fully bolstered recaros and optional keyless entry with these frankly awful rubber fobs.

It does not have a digital display between the clocks, just a black panel with a bunch of warning lights.

*these are the wheels that come standard on later GTIs.

(not my car - mine is a five door)

Thanks guys. The rear had the power sockets in the back. The cluster just had the black space so no display just the warning lights on start up.

Do you know if these came with any sort of imobiliser from factory. and had the Mags shown above.

Did you end up buying the car? What were the specs and price?

If these things are important you could always consider a Bora. The v5 Sports and the v6 will have keyless entry, mulit-function display, leather seats, rain sensing wipers, etc, etc. It's basically a Golf anyway, only you get a huge boot!

Probably $12k to $15k for a 2000-2002 with around 100k on the clock.

If your interested in engine mods though the GTI or the V6 Bora is still definately the way to go!

Well still in discussion on price. The guy wont budge at all. I have a my budget and he his.

It is the cleanest example i have seen for the price drives like new and with 70 odd kays on the clock is in very good condition.

Im talking my self into just taking it. i plan to have the car for some years and dont want to mod it (YET).

if u give us a link for the ad on carsales or whatever we can give u more info and advice on it.

for the record, my april '01 build (complianced/registered as '02) does not have the trip computer or keyless entry but i figure if i want keyless entry i can get a trick aftermarket alarm to complement the factory immobilisor (they all have it).

however, my brother's '99 build does have the keyless entry although when i drive it i always use the key anyway coz i lower all the windows to halfway when i unlock the car (best feature, so many people r envious of that feature when we all leave work to our baking cars and they have to juggle their crap and bother putting the key in the ignition and lower the windows one by one).

That price a little steep IMO.

There's another bloke on this forum thats selling his MK4 gti as well, swing round to the Classified section. It's located in Wollongong, an hour south of Sydney. Looks like a clean car judging by the pics!
