  • How many kms is too many kms on an R32?

    Hey,
I'm looking to buy a Mk4 R32. However it seems that most of them have around 100,000kms on them. I've found one, although it has 127,000kms on it. Do you think this is a bit too many? Do you think at this amount, if i did buy it i would be having reliability problems with the car? I only do about 12,000kms per year so it's not as though it will rack up a whole heap more kms any time soon.
    Cheers

Your looking at between 160-200k and it'll need a timing chain rebuild, and your looking at a few grand there.

I'd not be worried about buying one with 100k plus KMs on it as long as the price reflects it and the service history is complete.

They certainly don't wear out overnight. My S3 had just short of 200000 on it but supported by a full history, it's been a reliable car thus far. I have done a haldex oil change and replaced a CV boot and the brakes.

If its got a good service history and it looks like it has been looked after it shouldn't be to bad. As cars do get some age on them things will start to go wrong with them, like rubber hoes and seals they start to perish and go hard and brittle. Just go over it really good or even get it inspected at a mechanic shop.

That's only when the chain starts to rattle, can vary a lot from car to car, the guys in america are quoting 200,000 KM's especially with the uprated chain guides...

We're talking all highway miles across their greate expanses of highway. Which is only the circumstance in a rare number of cases and not the norm in Australia by any means.

Basically, chain guides wear and they cost a great deal to fix properly, on any VR motor, especially the R32 due to its age and the size of the motor.

Thanks for all the quick replies guys! The car costs $28,000 with 127,000kms. Do you reckon thats a good price? Or do you think i would be better off spending more like $33,000 and picking one up with about 80,000 to 100,000kms on it?

You should just pay 28k for the 2nd one as thats really as much as its worth...

                      24k if that...
thats what it'd go for, it'd get well under 20k as a trade in.

mine has done a 100k and i have had my front wheel bearings replaced twice (both wheels twice), AFM replaced, sway bar links replaced, coolant temp sensor replaced, it needs new discs all around and it needs front top mounts and probably some of the bushes on the front too. There is a clonking noise from the front suspension when turning and exiting/entering driveways. Drivers seat is getting a bit worn as well, the bit where the bottom part of the seat belt touches the seat and the gear knob is worn too. My advice is that if you cant get a low mileage one (50k or less) be prepared to put some money in it. And its an expensive car to run and parts are hard to find.
At my last service costed $650 for engine oil and filter to be changed, haldex oil and filter changed and coolant changed. Yhis was done by a VAG specialist and i know for a fact that he charges almost half price than VW dealers

I'd say with buying any secondhand MkIV to have $2-3k+ aside for preventative maintenance and some left over for things that might give up:
                            - full service - plugs, oil, fluids, filters etc
                            - bushes all round
                            - brakes
                            - temp sensor
                            - things that might stop working such as the MAF, fans, clutch pedal breaking
                            - etc
                            2000 Mk IV GTI
