Disc Rotors

Hi all,

I guess most of us have replaced disc rotors at some time. What are your thoughts on the different brands / combinations out their?

My MK4 is now due for disc rotors so was wondering what all of your experiences were. My car is a 1.6L and it is for regular street use only so don't need anything too high performance.

If there are brands of rotors that work well with a certain brand of pad that would also be handy to know.

Just keep to stock, for a 1.6 it really isnt necessary to upgrade to be honest!

I'm pretty sure DBA and RDA would both do OEM-spec replacements, and you'll pay less for them than you would from VW.

I would agree.

My previous experience has shown that a set of DBA's were cheaper than the equivalent OEM setup, and the DBA's were very good. I've used DBA 4000's before and were more than happy with them and would use them again. Apparently the Subaru team ran a set of the DBA4000's in the Bathurst 24hr sometime back and completed it in on the one set of Rotors.

For matching brake pads, I used a set of Ferodo DS25000's and wouldn't recommend them as they're a racing compound and 'squeal' when they're cold as they never really get to optimal temperature on daily driving - unless you plan on club racing your car, then these are an awesome pairing. A matching set of Ferodo street pads should be fine, but I would speak to whoever is replacing your brakes for recommendations...

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate your honest opinions.

I intend to replace the brakes myself and that's why I am asking for advice as to brands etc.

I'll be sticking to standard replacements but was wondering if any brand or combination was better than another.

I was thinking DBA myself and last time I was in Supercheap I think they had a special..."buy three DBA discs get the fourth free" or something like that...might look into that today.

Supercheap/Repco etc stock Ferodo pads. The DS2000/TS2000 (effectively the same product, just made in different places) is a step down from the DS2500s, though they probably have ones closer to OEM again.

DBA street series would be what you're after as an OEM replacement for the rotors.

Hi Pete,

Our recommendation for a street driven car with OEM or slightly better performance is RDA rotors, with QFM HPX pads. The HPX pads are a Bendix Ultimate or TRW Lucas equivalent performance wise, but very low dust and rotor wear. HPX pads to suit Mk4 1.6 are $79 per set front or rear, and both in stock.

Standard rotors are $52 each for the rears, and $66 each for the 256mm fronts, or $95 each for the 280mm fronts. (Should be the 256, but best to check, or if you can give me an exact model of your car, 1LQ, 1ZM etc.)
