I've only just noticed that my N75 valve has been bypassed by the previous owner at some stage. Has anyone here done this on there car?
There are few guys on vortex doing this to fix boost surging.
And put what in place???? N75 is the boost controller valve and has a duty cycle controlled by the ecu and wouldnt mess with it unless you are using an alternative controller adjusted correctly, unless you want a ticking bomb in the engine bay.

Do you perhaps mean the N249 valve which controls the wastegate, and can be bypassed to help control surging? I can't see how the car would run for long with the N75 completely out of the loop.
Sometimes replacing the N75 with the N75J version also softens the surge a bit - I've done this on a Polo.

The N75 is still plugged in, just the hose is looped back on itself. There is a MBC in its place, which i am assuming was put in when the car was chipped, once again by the previous owner.
Max boost is ~12psi.
So with the MBC it is ok to have the N75 bypassed?
if the car was 12psi it was definitely not chipped.
it was put in place to try do the dodge and get more boost, its not good for the car and no increase will come out of it imo.. go j or h valve and get a chip and you will get the performance change what you'd be wanting..
How well the car goes, boost gauge on it to check what your getting prob the easiest
you can tell a stock gti vs a chipped gti .. stock gti = hyundai getz lol
I watched the Top Gear Episode recently where they race a stock Mk4 GTI against a diesel Skoda Octavia and another car (a frenchie IIRC) - and the GTI comes stone, motherless last.
They then drive the Mk5 GTI and it's all smiles, sunshine and rainbows again.

Yeah VW didn't exactly do justice to the legacy and original intent of the GTI namesake with the MK4. It's also worth remembering that not all MK4's were created equal either, I'm pretty sure the poms got the AGU version like ours which was a 150hp and then there were the more desirable US models like the 20th Anni that were released with 180hp.
The chip that is supposed to be in the car is a .....cough....cough....powerchip
Apparently they are setup at 12psi. Yes i have read all the reviews on them, but it was in the car when i got it. The car seems to run fine IMO, no issues at all.

Don't forget the episode where they race a MK1 GTI vs a MK4 GTI, guess which one came last ?
That's why a chip is a must mod for MK4 GTI, just to make it a worthwhile car.
MK4 GTI - Sold
MK5 Jetta Turbo - Sold
MK5 Jetta 2.Slow - Until it dies.
