Jesus! That's just unacceptable in my opinion. My 1.8t doesn't use a drop.

After speaking to a VW mechanic I was told that the Golf 2.0L will use approx 1Litre of Oil per 1000km also stated in the Owners Manual, pretty shocked to learn this and suggest the anyone who ownes a Golf Mk4 2.0L check their Oil weekly, so much for German Engineering
did you take it to golfwagen? jo told me the same thing and where did it get serviced? when i first got my car i got the dipstick showing empty but no light after that i spoke to him i check it about once a month and keep it at the top it seems to burn less the closer to full it is once it get to the low end of the dip stick it drops off very quick

Mine doesn't use too much, at least not a noticable amount. It's funny how there is so much variation between similar models. Mine is an '04 though.

It's all to do with variables - construction tolerances and flaws, bedding in processes, oils used, environment, quality of fuel used, etc etc etc.
              Nothing to see here...

By 04 the ring drama was already dealt with. But i also agree with the other variables, i saw what destruction poor oil and extended change periods do to an engine last night, nice flat cam lobes, car running rubbish, no amount of tuning, new leads and plugs will ever fix that.

Most times when you do the oil consumption test its fine, when the top-up is done at 1000KM after checking the oil, its usually only used about 0.1-0.3L of oil which is well in spec. As Jmac states they are just thursty for oil and there aren't many around now that have the ring issues, just a few when they first came out years ago, think Ive actually only seen 1 car with a genuine oil usage over 1 litre before back in 1998!.... .VW........
