Before you go replacing parts, get it scanned first so you definitely know what it is. Maybe organise a member to scan it for you for a case of beer or something...

Thermostats are pretty cheap - I just checked some parts suppliers in the US and they're about $20 so expect up to 50-100% more locally.

common for being faulty, quick test after a short drive, if the gauge is reading low switch on your heater on HIGH and feel the temp in the cabin. If its nice and hot good chance the stat is good and its your temp sensor playing up. If its luke warm then your on the money with the Stat.

It wouldn't hurt replacing them both.

Pricing depends on the thermostat, too.

The electric jobbie at the gearbox end (if applicable), is around $220 exchange through VW. Conveniently, it comes with a new temperature sensor.

You can now get the thermostat seperate, dont have to buy the whole housing anymore, cuts down cost loads...............VW...........................

you can get a stat for 30 bucks ( i went with a 75 degrees celcius ) which means it opens at the temp rather than the stock 89 degrees or what ever it is.

                        easy to change .

Isn't it optimal to run at ~90 degrees celcius in the Golf?

Book it in for a scan??? Last week I rang up my mechanic with a blown coil pack - drove down in my lunch break, he scanned it, told me what cylinder it was and found out where one was in stock - all free!

If you know basically what the problem is and just need to know the error to pinpoint it, most reputable places will scan for free if you drop in....it only takes them 5 minutes

spoke to the service manager at vw yesterday, this is true but dosnt apply to all models, only the 1.6 i think.
