fuel is getting alot worse!

ok a while back i was getting around 12 liters to 100 k's and i was a little worried, on my last tank i only managed to average 16 to 100 k's, no city driving!

i disconnected the battery and went for a drive and it would appear the temp sensor is more responsive as it is varying alot now but on a flat road its still running at about 78c, but when going up a hill or if i put the foot in it would raise pretty quickly to a new temp (around 83-85c), only when i gave it a bit of stick coming back up my street did it hit 90c.

to me this sounds like the temp sensor is working and it may be the thermostat?


oh and btw i rang rex gorell VW and asked about a scan and what could be wrong with it, 50 dollars just to get a scan, and was quoted 150 for the coolant temp sensor, 600 for an o2 sensor and if it was injectors possibly 1-2 thousand, to me that is just fark'n rediculous!

are there any good mechanics and or parts suppliers in the geelong area that anyone knows and can vouch for?


oh and btw before i go rambling through my stock cd player manual it is displaying "code" on the display and not playing any radio or cd's how do i fix that up?

On my old VR6 I had this problem, though not 16L/100km!!! Would take a long time to get up to temp and sometimes didn't and would use around 10L/100km, changed the thermostat and it now gets up to temp in a couple of minutes and avg. fuel consumption is in the 7's.
As for the code for the cd player, you would need to find the code specific for your cd player, perhaps found in your owners manual somewhere? You will have to enter this code whenever the battery is disconnected or goes flat. That said, someone on here may know a way around it...

Yeah i dare say your thermostat is shot. Most likely stuck open and not moderating the coolant flow.

Just buy a cheapy VW OBD 2 scanner and look up the codes online.

They're good enough to just tell you what's wrong.

pete will that show up all codes on the vagcom system or does it miss some?

Sounds the same as my bora mate, thermostat i think as Preen59 said. Replace part by part if you can afford to, that way saves on replacing parts you dont need too that might still have some KM in them

It'll show up the major stuff like temp, crank angle sensors etc. Good enough for a quick check.

It'll show the stuff that stops the car running. There's a booklet that comes with them with a few hundred codes and their meanings.

Google up OBD2. It's a standardised interface legislated by the US govt (IIRC) in order to prevent dealers monopolising on servicing with propriety management systems.

Only difference with the OBD 2 scanners marketed on e-bay as VW specific is that they come with a VW specific list of codes. Any generic one like the one Jaycar sells will do the same thing you just need to google up the fault codes or look them up in a Bentley manual.

VAGCOM is much better of course as it translates the codes for you and can do a whole lot more.

These hand scanners are great for caryard inspections and using before wrecking a car to see if the vitals are all OK.

Oh, with VAGCOM in your scenario, it'll tell you all the water temps wherever there's a sensor so diagnosing the thermostat is pretty easy.

Can't do that with a hand scanner.

Or get a Vchecker, cost abit more but still much cheaper than vagcom.

i had the same problem with my R. The temp would vary and it took ages to get up to 90c. Consumption went through the roof. It was the coolant temp sensor. The car runs so much better now. Have a look at your sensor and if its not green replace it. Gray ones dont last very long. Go to IMPARTS, i was quoted $65 for a new sensor. I'd replace that first and then see if the problem is still there. I think its that coz of crazy fuel consumption. I dont think a thermostat stuck open would cause your car to use more fuel.

I have been wondering about this Pete as I have a OBD2 Scanner but hadnt tested it yet....good to know! Now I just need to find some free software for Windows 7...might be firing up the Windows 2000 laptop I think
