  • MK4 R32 - Fuel Consumption

    Hey Guys

    Now i know the common view on the R32 that it is a gas guzzler, but is it really ?

    The reason i ask is, when i first bought the R, just over a month ago, the first two tanks i was getting 350kms to the tank.

    The next couple i was getting about 420kms and these last couple of tanks i've been getting 450kms !! No im not running the tank dry, but the above figures are quoted to the point the light comes on which is about 40/50kms worth of fuel still left.

    Now any R owner i'm guessing would be happy they are getting better fuel consumption, but i'm a tad concerned. My driving style hasn't changed so why is my fuel consumption go down and down !! I know it seems weird for me to be complaining but i just find it very odd and a little concerning. The only change was first two tanks were pumped with BP Ultimate, and after that its been Shell V Power.

    Any valid explanation as to why? And also what sort of mileage are you fellow R owners getting?

    Cheers guys
    Naz

    Hey Naz,

    I've been averaging between 9.5L/100km and 10.5L/100km since I've had the car. Been about 6 months now. I'll admit that i do do alot of freeway driving, but when i have had to drive in the city or heavy traffic its only jumped up to around 11 or 12L/100km. This equates to about 570 to 550kms before the light comes on for the freeway and 530 to 480kms in heavy traffic.

    Hope this helps naz,

    Jared

      Just checked the car- says I'm averaging 9.5L/100 which I guess is reasonable, considering I had the air con on full blast....

        did you fix your temp sensor yet? That can cause the car to run rich if the values it outputs are a bit out of whack.

          Just driven back in my R32 (yes mine and not JVLR32's any more!!hahah), Coff harbour to south brisbane straight at a tad over the 110 limit, just cruising with a little play every now and then and Im getting a awesome 8.7L per 100. did 420km and brimmed it with 98 before we set off, now sitting slightly just under half a tank left!! Man I think thats good, My slow crap 4x4 did 13L per 100 and slow as. -VW-

            My combined average is 12.5L / 100km. Pretty bad. On freeway i need a long flat run to get into 9's.

              All my recordings of fuel economy are below:

              First 39 fills are Shell V-Power.
              Second 41 fills are BP Ultimate.
              Last 24 fills are Shell V-Power.

              As you can see my average economy started off quite high and has steadily decreased since.

              In that time CAI, chipping and exhaust have been installed.
              Lowest economies (best) are from highway runs and the highest economies (worst) are short fills after some spirited driving.

              With constant highway kms you can get it down to 9L/100km easy. City driving will kill economy. Fun driving is more important and economy be damned.

              If you really want to discuss economy I think you've well and truly picked the wrong car.

              However some calculations are below for economy figures are below:

              Economy Distance Traveled
              7L/100km -> 885.71km

              7.5L/100km -> 826.67km
              7.75L/100km -> 800km

                    thats a cool bit of data there treza. I must admit I agree about the wrong car for economy, if you want an economic car, get a smaller and slower engine

                      Hey all... just to make sure i have not caused any confusion... I am not complaining that i have poor fuel consumption. I have clearly stated that my fuel consumption is getting better and better and wanting to know the reason why

                      Tim: I have already ordered the coolant temp sensor and just awaiting for its arrival hopefully some time this week ... but luckily the hard starting issue has stopped but either way i will be replacing the sensor

                      I know it may seem an odd thing to be concerned about but i just want to make sure that it is not an issue.

                      Trent : That is one comprehensive sheet of fuel consumption logging it seems to be close to on par with the sort of mileage i am acheiving now. I have never really looked at the avg consumption value, more so the mileage i was getting to a tank.

                      I will see if changing the sensor has any influence on this matter. Thanks all for your input into this !!

                      Cheers guys

                              Because when you first got your .:R you thrashed the crap out of it. Now you are getting old and the thrill has gone. You no longer play head banging tunes but rather enjoy listening to e-books while sipping your latte in the left lane ??

                              Seriously - has your driving style changed much lately ?
