  • Does anyone think a MK4 forum "Tool Library" would be workable?

I just posted in another thread to help a fellow member locate a specialised tool (21-22mm Strut Top nut wrench) and it made me wonder about a forum "Tool Library".

Would it be even possible, or too hard to manage?

I know I have a few specialised MK4 VW tools here that spend most of their time just sitting in the garage, but are bloody handy when needed and can save hours of frustration. Just little things that make jobs easier, like a strut top nut holder, spindle spreader, VW oil filter socket, stuff like that.

I guess the basis would be an understanding that members could drop a deposit for the tool and then when returning it get the deposit back. If we compiled a list of tools people owned to make a "library" for reference.

A forum admin (or otherwise trusted 3rd person) could hold the deposit while the tool was borrowed etc. Obviously the system would need to be nutted out properly, and would rely on people using/returning things (undamaged) in a timely manner.

Is this worthwhile or not worth the trouble and "just Dreamin'"?

I reckon its a great idea Snowy, will require a lot of oragnisation, but would be worth it. As a newish mk 4 owner, I don't have any specific mk 4 tools, and probably would not know what I needed until I had a problem or job to do.
If there was atleast one person for each state, willing to share their tools in a library it would be even more workable.

great Idea, but I can see many complications arising. It'd perhaps be better to do something like this privately, and not involve the forum for possible legal complications.

Maybe a list of people who have tools can go unde the links in the DIY section. (is there a mk 4 DIY thread??)

I dotn think its such a great idea. Whilst im happy to lend things out to friends and have done so plenty of times. I just dont think its viable to do it on a bigger scale.

A tool library can only function if it cuts a profit because tools suffer from wear and tear or breakage.

I've thought about this before - I've got a strut housing spreader tool and a set of triplesquare drivers I'd happily let people use...
