  • boost guages

as i've been having troubles with my car, i was thinking a boost guage would be handy in determining wether or not i was getting the boost i'm supposed to be getting.

And should i get one that shows vacuum? forgive my ignorance, but what is the purpose of a vacuum readout...? i'm guessing vacuum occurs between shifts, or when you are engine braking?

And lastly, where do you mount yours? i was thinking of in the spare din with one of these.

dubbaddiction have one that mounts in the driver side air vent, but it's about $160 for just the mount.
i don't mind this one as a package http://www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-...Gauges/ES4304/ , but you gotta buy LEDs separate... and am guessing the needle can't be illuminated

They all show vacuum. It will show how much boost you getting under load and when you back off or shift the reading will go into vacuum

yeah sorry think i prefer the offset steering mount at this stage.
though not sure i want the gauge that comes in that kit. think i might get one which is already setup for illumination.

question though, nobody has answered my question about vacuum. what is the usefullness of this readout? would i be better off getting one that just shows positive pressure meaning you would be able to read your boost better because of the larger scale?

any quick responses will be helpfull as i'm trying to make up my mind asap so i can buy it!

i am going to order an a-pillar holder VERY soon. I bought a Defi gauge from an eBay seller.

Here is one email talking to John at 42 Draft Designs
Here is how pricing will break down:

                  mk4 RHD A-Pillar Gauge Pod (Gray): $75

                  Subtotal: $75
                  Shipping: $43
                  Total: $118

We ship all international shipments over $50 via TNT Global Express as USPS
is notorious for loosing packages and will not compensate us for them.
Tracking is also virtually non-existent, TNT is very reliable and will get
to you in a few days.
So we can halve postage costs.

Not entirely sure on boost gauges.

But I don't think it is odten that the boost gaube reads positive.

I think the scale will be there for 'in case'...

wait.. actuially.. i will let someone that owns a turbo say so...

I just screwed mine in jap style:

Also visible here (6:55 at night - same colour sceme as car)

And this is how to install:

It is VERY handy - especially if you're chipped.

                      ...

sorry I meant offset steering wheel mount! (not a-pillar!)
i'm thinking of getting the new south guage with changable backlight... http://www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-...uges/ES248860/
i wonder how you select the colour...

                        ah k, fair enough.

it is easier to attain thats for sure. but i didn't want it staring me in the face, and blocking my dash.

i think i read somewhere that you change the led globe, or somehitng like that.

On my old gti I fitted 3 Stewart Warner gauges in the empty din. Unfortunately I do not have any night shots but I had the OEM blue globes from 42 draft designs. I understand how you don't want them right in your face however it was difficult to try and look over to the centre consol and read the boost relative to the rev range.

nah i'm talking about the "spectrum boost gauge" from new south.
i did some searching and you just press a button at the rear of the guage to change the colour.
if i use the steering mount, i can just put a hole in the back of the mount to access the switch. plus the good thing is the guage only goes up to 25psi, not 30psi which just isn't neccesary!
