ok, i am guessing that toggle switch will be sensitivity?

I might just consult my manual like a normal human being.

The sensor can be viewed from the outside of the windscreen.
Look at where the auto dim rear view mirror is, you can see the plastic piece that connects to the windscreen. The sensor is located in the round piece.
I had this on my MK4 GTI also, worked well!

Anyone know if this is the case for the V6 Boras too?

My intermittant (I assume ) wiper doesn't seem to work properly and I'm trying to figure out what the issue is. The rain sensor (If I have one) or relay 192 which I do have.

I might tray and expose the base of the mirror and see if there's any wiring in there connected to the glass.

Does anyone have a picture of what the rain sensor looks like from out side the car? My mirror mount just has a a big black circle, does the rain sensor look like that or something else?

yeah mate we do. i use it all the time - a bit too sensitive sometimes, or not enough but they are not bad. that black circle is indeed a rain sensor. for us mk4s, you just need to move the rain stalker stick (the one on the right) one click up and it engages. however you need to reengage it every time you start the car. or i found an easy way of just toggling the sensitivity switch left and right again. hope that helps

Trouble is that when I toggle the sensitivity switch back and forth I get just one wipe. It was pouring rain at the time too, plenty of water for it to sense.

Might give it another go tonight , clean the glass first then hit it with the watering can.

Clay bar the glass above the sensor so its perfectly clean.

It seems to be a finicky setup otherwise.

If you are stopped the wiper sweep time slows right down too, as they also run off the speed signal as well.

All okay till you go to drive off and you cant see where you are going until it decides to wipe again because you are moving.

So if you are testing it you really need to be moving.

They are great on the highway when you pass a truck or something and they speed up through the truck spray then slow back to normal afterwards.

If you really hate it you can just swap in the normal intermittent relay and it will work the old fashioned way!

The relays are plug and play interchangable.

                        Good information thanks,

I'll have to confirm the behaviour again next time it rains but it did seem to me at the time that, even in a torrential downpour, at speed I couldn't get more than a single wipe out of any setting.

I've since pulled the relay (192) in and out, perhaps resetting it so now I understand the behaviour of the thing better perhaps it'll all fall into place.

I'll take another look at the manual too, I think I've been reading the intermittant wiper section on the assumption I didn't have the auto wipers.

What's the number on the intermittant only relay ? (Just in case)

The standard Intermittent relay is part number 4B0 955 531E

Just pull out the #192 relay and plug it in.

The little sensitivity lever on the stalk will still vary the sweep delay as well.

                            yeah, it works quite well.

i just realised that that toggle switch is sensitivity and not speed.

and its not bad. very luxurious!

                              something seems wrong, definitely.

i saw mine range from not moving enough, to good regular wiping with a pelting of rain.

pretty schnazzy for an 01 VW to have auto wipers... are we sure it has it?
