  • an r that sounds like a wrx? somethings up....

so, i was driving to work today, and when i toko off from some lights, all of a sudden the r sounds like a wrx, that same horrible fart can noise.... its not blowing smoke, no noises from the engine, no extra fuel being used... but it does vibrate just a tad....

havent had a chance to look at it further (stuck at work all day, too dark to look for anything amiss at the moment) but before i go crawling under, any ideas on what could be up? ill just have to park it up *again* until i can find out whats going on... any help would be great guys n gals,

    thanks

Sounds like a faulty coilpack or a loose lead, car is around 5 years old so yeah sounds about right for the age of the car as well...

I suggest you run the car in your garage or a poorly lit place and watch for any arcing of sparks against the coil packs.

WAIT!!! WHAT!!!!! for a coil pack?????? They wanted what now????????????

I was going to say to get them from ECS, thank god you did.

I got all 6 sent from ECS and all up it was $150 AUD landed, I don't even need to replace them I just got them to have as spares.

VW parts pricing are seriously out of control here, do me a favour take in your invoice from ECS to your VW parts guy and tell him to get his hand off his dik next time he quotes you a price

                Cheers Al

yeah, well he first went away, checked the computer, then asked if my car had been there before (i bought no 88 there, so i just said yeah and off he went) then came back with a kinda stunned mullet look, blurted out $250 each..... well i just kinda laughed in his face, told him about ecs and off i went. mind you this poor guy must be sick of me laughing at him.... i did the same thing when i asked for rotors and he quoted $2500. just for the parts, no labour.

i really dont get how they could quote that and keep a straight face!

i dont think ill bother even going to vw anymore, last month i had a problem with the alarm going off while driving (turned out to be a flat battery in a second alarm--who installs two?) and they wanted to keep it for a whole day...
good thing i just toko off, god knows how much they would of quoted!

lucky JVLR32! I've had 2 go so far, bought 3 to replace the ones that I hadnt replaced yet and found that I only had one left that wasnt rev. N, so I have 2 spares now

VW Quoted me $75 for mine and when my mechanic did a quick ring around for me he said one of the after-market coils were up around $200....but not the OEM Bremi units

Ironically, in the US there is a coilpack recall and VW will eventually replace EVERY coilpack on EVERY R32 sold there for free.
