  • mk4 gti rear sway bar

Hi Fellas, not sure if this is the proper forum for this but does anyone know where i can get a rear sway bar in brisbane? is it possible to fit it myself and how much roughly are they worth? and is it a worthwhile mod with stock suspension?

    cheers

    Hey mate,

I think you can order Whitline swaybars online or at Autobarn, both are easily done. There are also a few threads about installing them somewhere, I'll have a look.

Just google places that stock whiteline gear. When i got my bars last year it was a fair bit more to buy them direct from Whiteline

Easy to install the rear though, need min tools and a bit of time to figure out what your doing. Once you get going its all pretty straight forward though.

I'd re-upload them, but for some reason, I can't attach an image?
Only option is to provide a URL to the image.

hmmm the rear of my car creaks when i go over driveways etc slowly, which apparantly means my bushings are probably gone...

so is it a 21 or a 23mm sway bar?
and does the squeaking actually mean that it's not as stiff as it should be?
or will this simply fix a sqeak, i.e. no performance benefit.
if so, is it worth looking locally for a sway bar. i'm running on stock suspensin and plan on staying that way for at least a year.

                  audi-tone, Hell yes it's a worthwhile mod!!!!!

Best $279 I have spent on my golf, that was through Autobarn for the 22mm blade adjustable type. If you get one, make sure you fork out the bit extra for the adjustable one, not only will you get a greater range of driving dynamics, but it will help you to understand your car's behaviour and how you can drive in each setting to get the best out of it

Part number for the adjustable type is BWR22Z.

McDub, if you have a standard front wheel drive golf, unless you have fitted an aftermarket rear sway bar, then you don't need to worry about the diameter. The 2 diameters you have specified are for the front sway bar, the easiest way to find out what thickness you have is to get a vernier and measure it, my MkIV rally has a 21mm front swaybar.

First you say i don't need to worry about the diameter, but that doesn't sound right... you've confused me!
i've got a GTI, and it's the rear sway bar that needs new bushings.
i could measure it myself, but would prefer someone to confirm what it should be.

McDub, have you or the previous owner (if there was one) fitted an aftermarket rear swaybar? The MkIV golfs, bar the R32 did not come with a factory rear sway bar, only the front.

That is why im confused when you're saying that your rear sway bar bushes need replacing.

Look at the following images. If you look under the back of your car, do you see anything that looks like the sway bars in the pics?

                        Autotech

                        Neuspeed

                        Whiteline

The last is the same as my Whiteline one.

                        Or is it like this?

You may be mistaking it for the rear axle mount bushings, these will wear out and squeek..... http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1980960

What Gavs is saying is correct, you will have to measure the rear bar yourself as the GTI didn't come with a rear bar from the factory so no-one here can give you that answer. It could be anything, 25mm, 28mm, 30mm, 32mm etc. depending on what make/size aftermarket bar a previous owner has fitted.

If you don't have Verniers just use a decent sized shifter to gauge the bar then check the shifter opening with a ruler.

                              Snowy.
