they are part of the chair. think its to do with the leaver to raise/lower the chair? mine still works but is just a bit weak feeling. At least that's what i think it is, Silver dub posted about it a while back but i don't remember what the solution was...
It's a spring designed to keep the underneath of the car seat "taut". Once they fall out, they just keep falling out, putting it back is fairly pointless.

Mine fell out about 8 months ago and i started my investigationing. Basically it helps in the raising and lowering of your front seats. If you raise the seat whilst your not sitting in it you wont notice a difference but if you sit in the seat and try and raise it, it will be harder to do so. The reason they come out is because the tiny tab on the bottom of the chair in which holds one end of the spring has broken off. It's not worth fixing because you will have to replace your whole seat frame and it cost hundred's of dollars to do so, also then it is bound to happen again in the distant future. Vw obviously didn't make the tab strong enough in there designing stages.
