Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • My Painted Interior parts

Hey all, i dont contribute much so i thought this was my time to shine

viewing my interior i was not impressed with the scratched rubber coating on my plastics,

through viewing peoples methods of aiding this problem on both vortex and watercooled i thought i would give it a crack myself... so i got out my green scourer pads which did take the rubber off but also damaged the plastics beyond repair, i tried polishing with numerous products but i could still see the scouring marks left behind and the shine was very dull..

so i thought the only way to cover it up was with paint..
this was my first time painting so i thought i would get some help from my friend youtube
youtube showed me the basics so i got to it
i bought plastic primer, gloss black plastic paint, and gloss plastic clear coat
then proceeded to sand down my parts going down the grades... from 400 til 1200, then painted the primer, then the paint, then the clear giving at least 3 coats for each

Good idea Spida, I'll do this in the next holidays as mine are all peeling and it's really annoying. Did you paint the semi-circle storage compartment and cup holders behind the gear shift and handbrake console too?

Not a bad effort mate, although I would prefer it if they were smoother.

I rubbed that rubbery material off mine too, and then polished them up. They didn't come out perfect but they are better than what they were.

Note to GTI owners: try to avoid scratching the clear over the woodgrain inserts as it's almost impossible to bring back the original sheen.

thanks everyone for the comments, to answer your question at the moment i haven't done those parts but i plan on doing all the smooth plastics eventually.. i could have done them all smooth but my lack of paint experience would have taken me numerous attempts and i dont really have the time with two jobs and uni but i would like to con my mrs into doing it for me evenutally as she is an airbrush artist

yeah looks alright, but i reckon you should've sanded them down a bit more. I've done some of mine like a month ago and they came up really well. except i had a problem with the handles, coz i have an insert and some of the paint got into the grooves.
