  • MK4 Bora/Golf coilover extras

Hi Guys, well if my car doesn't sell (which is doesn't look like it will) a few changes will be happening, the 1st of which will be coilovers (most likely hottuning) I need/want to know what other parts ill need. i thought id post this in the MK4 section as some of it may be car specific.

    So...
ball joints, sway bars, sway bar links, wheel bearings, strut mounts, bushing, etc etc etc

What do i need, only possibly need, and where am i best to get them, was going to go online ecs but if i can get them in AUS for cheaper or a better option then please tell.

I have access to a hoist if that makes any difference.

car is a early 2001 bora 2lt with 18" A8s and 124,000km on the clock.

Cant comment on your 2L model directly, but I have purchased a front suspension refresh kit for my 4mo and it is currently in transit from US. The Stage 2 kit covers most of the necessary bits for the front end and I have been told that it makes a noticable difference.

I have also picked up a set of F & R sway bars (thanks Sukebe ) and I have also sourced a set of bilsteins to go on when the kit arrives from the US...

          sorry to jack your thread,
But with the refresh kits from ECS would there be much difference in stage 1 and 2. i notice its only the tie rods that's different. Would that matter so much?

If the tie rods are upgraded/stronger, you can throw the car into corners harder and not have them snap

I'm probably one of the people who've told goodfella that the stage 2 kit makes a noticable difference - it certainly does. I had a lot of knocking going on in my front end, and the struts were sitting at an angle because the strut-top mounts were stuffed. The stage 3 kit adds lower control arms, which you really shouldn't need (though the lca bushes are pushed in for you), and a few other bits I didn't think were necessary.

Make sure you get stuff to suit the FWD Bora - the AWD one has some important suspension differences.
              Nothing to see here...

                It's not just tie rods.

The stage 1 kit has the stock rear LCA bushes which have holes in them, the stage 2 kit has the R32/TT version with no holes (much stronger due to no material removed).

So drop links (same as sway bar links?), refresh kit stage 2. What else do i need guys?

Also, had a thought, will i have problems with my wheels? there 18" A8s from tempe (don't hate me haha) the fronts only miss part of the suspension by a few mm as it is...

If you have the width and offset of the wheels, you should be able to find out how close to the hub face the new coilovers will come, and from that establish how much clearance you'll have.

This is one reason I stuck with OEM wheels no wider than 7.5" - I knew I'd have clearance for the coilovers I was after.

I would have stuck with stock, as much as i love the look of my 15"s they just didn't do the car justice.

there 8" wide... don't know the offsets (does anyone know them of a tempe A8 18"?), just went and had a look at my stock springs, and the coil overs from the pics seem skinner then the stock springs... so should work? ill upload a pic of what's currently going on..

going by genuine A8s they'd work out 22mm less...? is this ok?

Please find pics attached. sorry about angles etc.

I've got my coilovers! TA Technix to be exact (same as hottuning??)

What other parts do i need/want?

                            So far:
                            stage two refresher kit.
drop links (same as sway bar links?)

                            what else do i need...

I would recommend new top mounts. As it easy to fit them at the same time, cost around $70

I would also fit r32 solid rear front bushes. $110 I paid a few weeks back through VW ex Sydney.

Depending how low you want to go a front sway bar may be needed. Drop links didn’t do enough for me so adjustable sway bars are next to go in all round.

I also had new top mounts machined for my coilovers as they didn’t seat properly in my opinion and reduced them in height by 10-15mm, will be interested to see how you go.
