I sometimes get a short squeal on startup, half a second max usually, only seems to happen when it's a colder morning (I think). Don't know if that might be the same wheezing sound you describe? I wondered if it could be a belt?

Re greasing the starter to get rid of the sound is only a TEMP fix.
I have done it once my self - got 3 months quiet starts.
Mechaninc sent it away for new bushes at service time, got 3 months quiet starts.
Mechanic cleaned and regreased when doing clutch and flywheel, got 2 months quiet starts.

Next time its a new starter, just gotta find the $$.

Mine sounded like a shriek and the noise came when the starter shaft would be retracting back into it's housing. So like the others said, if it sounds like that, pull the starter off and apply some good grease (hi temp stuff but I wouldn't use moly).
I actually ended up rebuilding the starter (by accident! it's doable so don't freak out if you pull the rotor out and the bushes fly everywhere..) and I didn't really notice anything that would cause a noise of that level, but now it's gone and hopefully for longer than 3 months
