In concurrance, it sounds like the air pump. Nearly all the MK4s I've dealt with make that noise.

No body mentioned the starter noise.
I've had trouble with my starter running over on startup. Have had it fixed 3 times now. Can sound like a duck under the hood.

Yeah i had that problem also, more like a grinding sound, only for a second. but it seems to have gone again. Might be worth while jsut getting a new 1? apparntly they can be a pain to fix as in your case fixing it doesnt always work. but thats just what iv been told..

yeah its a similar grinding sound, like was just wondering if it was gonna cause any damage to the car in the future, so i'd get it fixed but if its nothing its cool then, thanks guys.

If it is the starter motor it should be ok on hte rest of you car (as far as i know anyways) I was told it could make that sound everytime you start forever, and keep working, then one day just stop. So be prepared for the day it does incase its tomorrow haha good luck!

Being in the motor trade (even if for only a few months), the only thing I could think of that would damage your engine itself is the gear on the end of the starter-motor shaft ripping up your flywheel and its own teeth, but that's pretty extreme.

I am not 100% sure, but as I said with my minimal knowledge it shouldn't harm the car whatsoever if the starter motor is dying or making weird noises. Unless of course, the grinding is the teeth slipping and ripping away at both gears.

Have someone listen to it when you start the car, to pin-point the problem.

having the same thing happen with my car, my guess is its the starter motor aswell as the noise slows down as soon as the motor turns over.

i had the same train of thought as mickey. i cant imagine the starter motor doing any damage to the flywheel but as for damage to itself i dont know how one really works.

but as stated earlier if the starter motor goes your pretty much rooted, which is not what id call ideal

                          hey

dude ive done a couple of these the grease that lubricates the shaft that pokes in and out (pokes out when starting car to turn flywheel) is all dried up vw is cheap uses crap grease some silicon spray in the shaft should fix it (temporarily) or you could take it out, take it apart and grase it properly. its a common vw fault!

Cold start up , secondary air pump, noise hot or cold guaranteed noisy starter, only fix is overhaul or replace. German Auto parts will land you one cheap mate, not a bad job, back in the day Mk3 , 2 and 1 all bolted through the engoine mount, Mk4 you are laughing.
