  • V5 engine number location

    Hi guys,

New to the watercooled VWs (previously owned a T3 Kombi, sadly no more)
    now with a 2002 V5 Bora & 75,000kms.
I'm trying to find the engine number location (SA police need to check VIN/
engine no. to prove it's not stolen).
The handbook doesn't say, label in boot shows first 3 letters only, and the Haynes manual I have isn't for the V5 or V6

I spent half an hour with a torch yesterday, taking off the engine cover and still only found the gearbox number.

I tried searching the forum for engine number, using .+& to no avail, what is the trick?

    Thanks for any help.

There's some info (could just be the VIN) right at the base of the windscreen (under the bonnet), under a clear plastic window in about the middle of the car.

Other than that, I'm not sure, sorry!
    Nothing to see here...

It's underneath the car from memory. There should be a label sticker on the top of the engine but the number is actually stamped underneath somewhere. I remember reading it in a service manual and when I asked VW service.

The window under the windscreen is only VIN.

Don't feel like getting under the car, it's wet out, and how do
you look under a car which seems to have ground clearance of about 10cm?

Isn't it in the boot, on a label near the spare tyre?

Already answered in the negative unfortunately:

Normally that's where the VIN number is the engine number is normally stamped onto the engine itself.
