  • Mk 4 Sump plug removal - HELP please

I need to do an oil change on my recently acquired MK4 Golf, but the sump plug requires a tool with a hex head to be inserted rather than a bolt head that simply would need a socket.
Tool is not amongst the wheel changing stuff in the boot, or elsewhere in the car.
When removed, can I change this for a bolt type?
What is it, who has one and how can I get one please?!

your local tool shop should have an allan (spelling?) key that can fit in there. Id rather buy the tool than replace the bolt. There must be a reason why its like that. You'll need a new washer as well. On some cars the washer comes with the oil filter, im not sure about VW

Thanks, it will be a pretty big allen key, but yes, it's that type of thing.
Dont see how there would be a washers as the plug scews straight in and there is no bolt head, so it cannot hold a washer...

Wait there, something aint right, you are sourcing a large hex, just checking you are in fact looking at the engine sump?????????? Gearbox is a 17mm Hex.
If it is in fact a hex for the sump then its had issues, be very careful. In these case i prefer the piggy back plug. The main hole is then sealed for life and the new piggy back will be the new drainer

Thanks Jmac, I'd better have another look and make sure
I simply looked for the plug at the lowest point of the engine

There is! VW hate us it's simply there just for the purpose of making us go to a dealer or buying the tool to get at it.
