Reports of Bora unreliablity??

I have to agree with what it's been said, you are better off with a Bora than with a Golf, the gearbox is the strong one, engines are all good, 4Mo is good and reliable ( same unit used in Audi ) , etc. Electrics are weak and cheap compared to the Audi ( but that is for all VW ) , but nothing is a deal breaker.

I say buy it!

wow guys, what a great forum for feedback. thank you to all thats piped up its been a good little learning experience. I for one always try and do my best searches but with this it proved too hard typing things like "bora" or reliability" so your comments and (more importantly) personal experiences with the Bora are appreciated.

I was never in danger of being turned away from the Bora idea and i just wanted to put forth the opinions of my mate's cousin. maybe he got some duds, maybe his team got lazy, i dunno.

and moreover, i am watching the related thread about the R32 zorst being modded to fit the Bora. Should sound awesome.

i definitely want to test drive a few asap and figure out the mods i'd like first. it sounds like i should help it breathe better with a catback zorst (I hear the R32 mkiv's headers are the same length?) and then it appears not much can be done to the power levels but the torque curve can be smoother. next steps appear to be brakes and suspension/handling.

i can't wait to get into one (should be a few months away yet tbh) and then to pepper the forums with questions and try and pick up parts too

With all due respect, that's only partially true.

Only one of the three engine/drivetrain variants in the Bora were shared with the Golf in Australia, and that's the 2.0L 4-cylinder version. It should also be noted that the V6 4Motion shared its gearbox and AWD system with the Mk4 Golf R32, but not the engine, and whilst the Mk3 Golf VR6 had a 2.8L V6 in it, it was the 12v engine, and not the later 24v engine that the Bora V6 4Motion received.

The V5 and V6 were not shared with the Golf in Australia at all, and thus it's entirely possible that if these engines and their associated drivetrains were more prone to faults than the 1.6/1.8T/2.0 engines, then it would be entirely possible for the Bora to be less reliable (generally) than the Golf. That said, The 02M 6-speed gearbox on the V6 4Motion and R32 is tougher I believe than the 5-speed, and the 1.6L has a (potentially undeserved) reputation for having a slightly dodgy gearbox.

There's at least two of us in Sydney with Bora V6 4Motions - goodfella has the Custom-Code flash on his, and his car definitely has more "pull" than mine with the stock engine management. My car on the other hand has the upgraded Haldex controller and upgraded brakes on it, and will shortly be sitting on coilovers as well, so that'll give you an idea on those upgrades. Both these cars were built after the mid-life model upgrade (mid 2002), so they do have some differences when stock to the earlier models (largely cosmetic from what I can tell).

Um, they're the same electrical systems, just a few different exterior panels and the interior differentiate between the A3 and Golf. I also believe that up until the last update of the A3, Audi were still offering a derivative of the often lamented MkIV Golf 1.6 engine....

Dont know why you think this, Ive got glove box, CD players and a few other panels off mine at the moment - putting a sound system in - and all the wires are stamped with both VW and Audi logos on them! And yes I know its the same company, but I hardly think theyre going to change them

Yeh Torque, I hang around with a lot of AUDI owners and am an AUDI owner myself having had an a4 avant 2.6 and now an older 80cc and 80 Quattro and the general concensus is whether it be by ignorance or brand superiority is that Audi's are somehow manufactured in the land of OZ and VW's in a backyard.

I do admit that generally everything is that much nicer because more money is being spent but the general underpinnings of the car's is the same for e.g.

Bora V6/Audi tt 3.2/audi tt 225 quattro/Audi s3/Golf R32 all share very similar/exact underpinnings. My drivetrain/haldex diff/gearbox/brakes etc etc all have VW and AUDI logos stamped on the parts.

So yes, I also tend to disagree with the wiring statement.

I just sold the mk4 Golf, and it was virtually like new condition with 60k kays ...

Same generation ( ok the Audi is the facelift 2001 , one year younger ) and the VW compared to the Audi ; using watches which I own as analogy : feels like the cheap knockoff chinese replica compared to an original TAG Heuer watch ( I have one of each too, difference is exactly the same )

I also owned a Golf Mk2 diesel, mk3 diesel in Europe, and Audi 80 , audi 100, audi A4, a beemer and many more French cars...

The 4 rings has always been standing out; electrics, plastics used, and the robust feel is there.

I fixed more golfs than most people here as I had a workshop in Europe... I know how they are, trust me; and I still think they are a good car, not saying otherwise

Let me tell you none of them comes close to the solid feel of the Audi interior; the plastics just feel cheap(er).

OK, the engines are superb and so is the steering and so is the stability ( the M3 has an amazingly well designed steering rack, it is rock stable at any speed ... you need to really stuff up to upset it ).

But, again, if you are looking for reliability and quality there is one answer : Audi.

I know it's offtopic, but meh

Apparently the latest BMWs (Z4 in particular) have taken the interior quality back up to Audi's standards - the new Z4's built in Germany and not the US as the previous model was, and apparently not only is the interior design much nicer than previously, but the quality difference really shows.

This is good for us all, as Audi will now strive to be that little bit better again, and VWs will improve along with it (dragged along as Audi gets better).

Did you ever get a chance to drive the Z3 M sport ? I would have liked to have known what they are like comparitively. Probably the M3 has a lot more balance.

No... To be honest, I don't like the old Z3 shape... I would not be probably happy with it, plus I need the back seats

The new one is all right though, if you can live with 2 seats .
