  • 2.0 Timing Belt replacement confusion

hey guys, new VW owner here, ive got a mk4 2.0 5spd manual with 97,000km on the clock and i love it!

ive done a search but couldnt find a definite answer about when is the best time to change the timing belt on my car

im a bit confused (or im just blind) because i cant see anywhere on the below chart that says when to replace it. It only tells you when to check it, and when to replace the tensioner.

should it be done at 100,000km or maybe 120,000? im really not sure. any help is appreciated and i apologise if this is one of those topics that comes up over and over again.

    thanks in advance,
    Anthony

think its meant to be changed every 60,000k's or 4 years?
that's the case for our beetle 2.0L

Yep, 60,000kms is what's recomended. If you have your service book, you may have an extra clip in (i do in mine) specifying when the "toothed belt" or "ribbed belt" aka timing belt should be changed.

          hi,

i do them every 120,000 kms. look at doing the water pump they have plastic fins that can brake off.

hey brother ive got a 2.0; sport and i changed mine at 110,000km. my brother found somewhere in the service book thats roughly about when it should be done. but i guess the earlier the better. seb did mine and did a great job.

phew! thats good news, cos last night after i read the first two replies i checked my service books and almost had a heart attack when i noticed that the "toothed belt" box had never been ticked in any of the previous services...especially when they've all been done at vw dealers.

so this means i can wait a while before i need to do mine...sweet! thanks for your input guys

I was told mine was in good condition and could have lasted longer. But then again that may not always be, as i think someone said before, better to get them done earlier then later, considering it one of the 'big' services, its not crazy expensive..

Hi Mate, Timing belt should be done every 4 years or 105k which ever comes first. If you wanna take the risk and wait for the 105ks then thats up to the individual. If you're in Melbourne and need a good mechanic give vw_tech a PM.

                      Cheers

Suicide if you dont do the water pump, change it for one that has a metal impellar, you wont regret it. 95% of the ones i pull out when doing belts are knackered.
Change the timing belt evry 4 yrs regardless of ks as well dont forget.
                        Cheers

okay so im going to get this done in july by a friend who is a mechanic but i want to get the parts myself. what other parts do i need besides the timing belt and water pump?

at my work we do some work for Gates, so ill get the timing belt through them. what about the waterpump? anyone know where to get the best prices? and what miscellanious parts that i might need?

thanks heaps for this guys, you're all very helpful!
