I have a Mk4 Golf and cold air is no longer coming out of the air con no matter what temperature it is set at. The wife was driving it when it stopped and she said there was a burning smell around the same time. I checked under the bonnet to see if there was anything obvious and noticed two wires leading to the compressor had melted where they had touched a pipe leading to the radiator. I'm guessing that could be the cause. Does anyone know what they are for?

Those 2 wires cause the clutch in the compressor to kick in and start it pumping. You could put power to the thing and see if it starts pumping.

Yeah thatll be the cause for sure causing a short. You will most likely also have blown a fuse in the fuse holder stemming from the short at the compressor , fuse holder is on top of the battery, this can melt too so have a good look.
