  • Mk4 Golf ('00 GL Rally) Remote Locking Recommendations

    Hi all,

I'm new here, but I'll try and follow the protocol.

I've got a 2000 Golf GL Rally (Mk4) which I had the Votex remote locking installed as an option when the car was new. One of the remote has been lost (oops) and the other has deteriorated so badly that the grey rubber buttons no longer exist. Remote locking is good to have, especially for hatch access when it's raining, so I'd like to get this function back.

The local dealer has a new remote as well as a complete remote locking kit available. I'm loathed to spend more money on a cruddy remote, and so I'd be interested to hear people's suggestions on other remote locking options. I know there are other threads discussing this, and I've read them, but they are more aimed at DIYers I think.

I'm OK with electrical stuff, but not so hot on the mechanical side of pulling parts of the car apart (a few bits left over after a VHF/UHF radio install). For that reason I'd prefer for someone that knows what they are doing to do an install.

My main questions is: what is the best remote locking option out there, that works with the VW factory central locking, has a small remote/fob, has hard plastic buttons that won't wear out and can mount on a keyring permanently? Any recommendations on shops that do a good job in the Brisbane area (Western suburbs) would be appreciated too.

    Thanks,
    Dave.

If the previous remotes lasted 9 years, don't you think you might get the same from a new one??

I fitted one of those Votex kits not long ago to a mates mk4. I have seen those remotes before, possibly Cobra I think.

Certainly the simplest fix is a new dealer remote or 2. You need to program them into the box in your car though, which will mean finding it under the dash.

Ask them for a copy of the instructions from the kit.

The little rubber tags that join the fob to the key ring broke in under 2 years, and the buttons failed after about 3 years. I swapped fobs with my wife who didn't drive much. For the last three years the car hasn't gone far and we've made do. I really don't want to spend $300+ for a product we know is cruddy. If it was $100, then I could live with it.

I thought that there would have been a heap of products out there for cars that have central locking, but not the remote locking.
