  • Under engine plastic guard.

    Hey guys.

    The platsic piece shielding the underside of my engine has had it, it came loose and was scraping on the ground so its pretty well fanged.

    Anyway, i'v pulled it off and i will replace it during the next service, but what im wondering is firstly, should i replace it straight away? it dosnt seem like a vital part as far am im concerned. And how bad will VW rape my cash supply for a total replacement?

    Protection wise it does a little but really bugger all. It's more of a splash guard than anything to stop water etc getting in.
    Dunno how much VW will charge you for one but I just had mine cut and removed and an aluminium skid plate fabricated and installed. Provides some proper protection for my sump etc.
    It's pretty similar to this:

      im not saying that it applies to a mk4. But i think you will find on some cars the undertray also plays a part in how airflow works through the engine bay.

      I have heard on some cars that it can have an effect on things like the cooling system and such.

      Perhaps there are some engineers on the forum that can explain if the above is true or not?

        I have just had issues with my power steering in the rain, and it turns out that it's due to having no guard whatsoever under the car so water just splashed all over the stuff under there. This is from the previous owner having run over something pretty substantial I think.

        I'm looking for a new one too, but I have heard it may be pretty expensive to get it from vw.

          useless as far as im concerened took mine off 3 years ago, i have a gt28 and have driven the car to and from QLD 10 times (during floods too) without a hitch, mines pretty intact scratched but intact, if you want it pm me (free)

            Yeah, I know on an RX-7 I owned, removing the plastic sump 'guard' had a major affect on the cooling efficiency.
            Leave yours in place if possible.

            My lowered Bora has a pretty banged-up guard - at the moment it's held together with cloth tape
