An update for you -
Fifth gear has smashed itself to pieces, bits of teeth schrapnel everywhere. I had a look at it in pieces, and it turns out 5th is outside the main bit of the gearbox in it's own housing. The bearing where it slots into the main housing was chomped too.
A replacement 5spd box has been located (exactly the same code too) with significanly less km than mine I'm told - 30k vs 75k on mine. That means there's less wear to begin with which is good. I'll be double checking to see what warranty if any comes on this though as it has been sourced from over east.
Turns out too the gears hadn't punched through the box which is what I thought had happened (expecting at the time that it was the rivet issue), so I think what I must have seen was actually just the air con dripping & I was stressing at the time and didn't think about it logically haha
There will still be some out-of-pocket cost for me, but not the whole lot which is great, so I'm pretty happy with the outcome.
I've also seen a few other threads discussing gearbox oils too and Redline MTL has been mentioned several times. I realise oils ain't oils, but I wouldn't know the difference myself. Any pros/cons of this one etc? I'm thinking it would be good to get a really decent oil put in now to help minimise future wear but do it while it's going in now rather than next service etc.
Geoff.
