Dub newcomer - GTi MkIV

Hi all,

Here is my new pride and joy - acquired last night.









The basics:

-'99 silver MkIV GTi (what's the proper name for this colour?)

-123k km

-Black leather interior + sunroof

-Good condition all round - some small marks on the bonnet where a roof tile fell off during a recent storm.

-Oettinger chip to 143 kW

-Upgraded brakes from Audi TT

-Clutch from VR6

-3" turbo-back exhaust (twin tips not shown too clearly in photo)

-Came with 5 x stock alloys, as well as 4 x Montreal II's.

Haven't had a good chance to give it a go yet but am going down to the Mornington Peninsula for Easter so I'll take it for a spin through Cape Schanck, Red Hill...

So anyways, a few questions for the learned Dub community:

-Exhaust: Not sure that I love the 3" exhaust. A little bit too 'full-on' for me at this stage I think, specifically the noise and the 'look at me' twin tips. I'm thinking I'd like to tone it down a little, both visually and aurally - but obviously not so much that it impacts on performance. So any suggestions on what my options are?

-Wheels: Obviously a car doesn't need 9 alloys, so one of the sets will have to make way. Interested to hear what people's thoughts are on whether to leave the current ones on (what are these ones called?) or chuck on the Montreal's. And maybe down the track I'll invest in some slightly larger ones (though not too large or too blingy). So any thoughts or suggestions? And if I decide to get rid of one of my current sets how much could I sell them for (in OK condition with partial tyres left)?

Congrats on the new ride Bert it looks like a clean example with a few nice additions already. I agree with you on the exhaust tho doesn’t fit the rear bar.

As for the wheels you can sell me the Montreal II's

I agree, they certaintly dont suit the rear valance on the car, too much pipe I'd go with a single pipe, just not a massive ricer canon. Definatly get rid of the rims that are on it and stick on the other set.

i sure the exhaust could be toned down a bit... take it to an exhaust place and have a look at the current setup... if its very 'drony', mabe add a resonator and change the rear box to something of higher quality?

have noticed that those kind of mufflers (ie. magnaflow) can sound rather tinny and cheap soemtimes, so it would be best to take it to a good exhaust fitter to see what your options are...

personally i think the 4 motion rear valance with twin tips looks great, however if you wanted to keep you standard valance, hide the tips behind it so nothing can be seen... 4 motion valence is a must as it makes it look standard, without it, an aftermarket muffler sticking out looks out of place and very tacky...

and as for the wheels, pick whatever suits you best mate, i think the ones that are on it look nice if the car is lowered a tad...there also a little less common than the others as they were only available on the very early MK4's...

oh and as for those leather seats... im bloody jealous... looked for months for one with leather and then gave up... just make sure you keep it niceley dressed, nothing worse looking than cracked leather seats...

nice car mate, very clean. As everyone said before, get rid of the tips, tuck them up behind the bumper, sell both sets of wheels and get 18" black wheels with a polished deep dish and a set of springs. It will look awesome!!!

Thanks all for the feedback - so far I'm very happy with my purchase, the car is very much enjoying the chance to stretch its legs through the open roads of the Peninsula and I'm loving it!

With regard to the exhaust and rear bumper options mentioned above - can people please post some pics of their rear setup to give me some ideas. And also can anyone recommend a good exhaust place to go to in the S-E suburbs of old Melbourne town?

PS Previous car was an '85 Berlina (EFI, dual fuel). Definitely a step up in motoring refinement and performance!

What's wrong with an exhaust that bursts your ear drums? As long as it makes a glorious roar that is and not a mindless drone that is (an angry VR6 will help this).

Welcome to the forums by the way Bert. A nice mint GTI you go there. Personally I prefer the Montreals over the stockys but then again there are plenty of nice aftermarket rims that you can get as well.

I've just gotten back from a long weekend away and the new baby thoroughly enjoyed the open roads away from the city.

There is a type of vw wheel that has same/similar sized centre caps, so i might think about grabbing a set off ebay at some stage, and seeing how they go
