  • Squeaking/rattling centre console

    Hi all,

I've got a squeaking/rattling centre console (the bit that surrounds the gear shift and runs up into the ashtray) on my 2003 Bora V6 4Motion. It seems from some reading that this is relatively common, though I'm yet to see any reference to a potential fix.

    Anyone have any ideas?

is the ash tray rattling or the actual surround? try some 3M foam tape where the 2 dash and gearbox surround meet.

The actual surround. I can wiggle the whole piece a centimetre or so each way with my hand (or by resting my leg on it). The squeaking does seem to be from where it touches other parts, foam tape might do the trick!

sounds like u might be missing a screw or something as it shouldn't be loose.

I had another look last night, and the distance it moves isn't as bad as I thought (more like half a centimetre tops) - but the squeak/rattle is certainly bad.

Will be trying the foam tape...

Same same, the wife's Golf had a similar problem. Squeaking like a mouse in a blender.
Rather than foam tape, I used self adhesive felt tape - about 1.2mm thick

It was a real PITA to find a supplier - but located one in Melbourne.

Only problem is that you had to buy a slit roll.
Only A$40 but I had enough to do the all the interior squeaks.

            Hope this helps.

If you have annoying squeaks in the plastic parts of the dash and you are unable to use something like foam or felt, try a very small squirt of silicon spray in the join. Works a treat.
